RE: What caliber for deer hunting

crump116,

Forget the 243Win. It's an excellent varmint cartridge, and will pass for some for deer hunting if shots are kept within a couple hundred yards.
There are far, far better cartridges...

RE: 257 Roberts?

I'd pass on the 257Robts., and look at the 6.5x55 Swede. The Swede makes for a much more effective deer cartridge, using 140gr. bullets in its' standard factory loadings, and there's a 156gr. load...

I'd recommend you look into a Sig 9mm pistol. For accuracy, consistency, reliability, etc., I think the Sig is the best I've encountered. Nice triggers, and no dang fool external safeties to contend...

RE: .270 vs .30-06

270Win. or 30-06? Either one will do a good job for you. However, with bear & elk on the menu I'd lean to the 30-06. The '06 will have the advantage there due to the availability of heavier bullets...

RE: What are good, cheap, scope rings?

From least expensive to more cost, I've used Weaver rings, Millet, and Leupold. I've not had any problem with any of 'em. I like the Leupold now with the torx head screws.
BTW, your scope should...

RE: 30-30 pump

RE: Good long-range deer calibers.

I'd recommend a pass on any of the 25cals. (25-06 & 257Wthby.). They're good long range cartridges, BUT you did say deer "on up". For deer only these 25's are excellent long range cartridges, but...

RE: Good long-range deer calibers.

Some good long range cartridges for deer "on up" would include the 280Remington, 30-06, and 7mm Remington Mag. IMO, the .30cal. mags don't offer enough over the old '06 to make 'em worthwhile. If...

RE: Ruger Model 77 / WInchester 70 / Remington 700 (decisions.... decisions...)

[b]

First off, I'd take a 270Win. ahead of a 7mm-08. There's just a lot more variety in the selection of ammo, and IMO, it's even more versatile if you
reload.
All three are good rifles, but...

RE: .243 Hunting Question

With the 243Win., I'd limit the range to approx. 200yds. For longer shots I want more, like a 25-06, 270Win., 280Rem., 7mm-08, 308Win., etc.

Yes. Sight in approx. 2-1/2" high at 100yds. You'll be approx.
6"-8" low then at 200yds. No holdover needed out to 150yds.
And, don't worry about holding low. Not that much rise to worry about.
