2 weeks ago I was in a shop in Paducah KY, they had a new Ruger in 257r for $459.
I thought real hard about buying another rifle I do not need.
Ohio is a shotgun only state for deer gun season

I have a Ruger M77 in 25.06. (older tang safety) As for deer the 25.06 is more than heavy enough & as the .257 is onlya littleslower it should also be an excelent deer round.
As for the Ruger rifle I am more than happy.

Best Wishes & Good Luck

I'd pass on the 257Robts., and look at the 6.5x55 Swede. The Swede makes for a much more effective deer cartridge, using 140gr. bullets in its' standard factory loadings, and there's a 156gr. load also available. Recoil is still very mild.
The Swede can be had in the Ruger 77, and is also available in the Wincherster Featherweight stainless.

It might be worth trying to find a Remington Model 7 youth rifle in 260 or 7mm-08. They are lighter in weight and the but stock is cut to better fit a small framed person.

Good classic caliber and good for most deer. Use good bullets. Also think about 7x57 (or 7mm mauser), 250 savage, and my favourite small deer caliber, the 6.5x55.My buddy loves his .260 rem.I am one who believes in jsut enough gun. I shoot light recoiling rifles better than big ones
good luck

I like the way you think.. You just rattled off some of the best deer calibers out there IMO. Right by my dest here I have a 250 Savage, a 6.5x55 and a 7mm-08. Over in the other corner sets a 308,a 270 and another 250 Savage. Oh, and a 25-06. I don't need that darn recoil anymore either. The 270 and 308 are about at the top of my shoulder comfort level. I still shoot the 45-70 but not as much as I should.

After completing my first full season with the 7-08...all I can say is I am in love...lol. As good as it is Im wondering if the 260 might even be better. All that power without recoil is sweet.....I have shot my last thumper for deer..lol.

Doe Dumper. I don't think that one would see much difference in performance between the 260 and 7mm-08. The 260's lighter bullets would give a bit less recoil while retaining enough SD. to be good deer bullets. However on the other end of the spectrum, the edge in heavy bullets would go to the 7mm-08. Now, knowing the kind of guy you are, I can see both in your future.

You know me awful well James The big decision is whether to buy a 6.5 Swede or the 260...if I wanted a 260 I have been thinking about rebarreling that 243 adl I had. Would that be a good idea or would it be cheaper to buy a new gun? Is there a lot of recoil difference from the 7-08 down to the 6.5's? If I buy a new 260 its Mod 7 all the way. Not sure what I would get if I opt for the Swede.
