3in., four shot groups at 100yds. with open sights using an old Remington semi-auto, and factory ammo- not too shabby. Nope, not bad at all!

Nothing wrong with Winchester 150gr. for deer hunting either. It'll do.

As noted, if you can convince your grandpa to go with a low end fixed power scope, say 4x, or maybe evena low magnification variable like a
1-4x, your groups will likely tighten up quite a bit.
Another alternative is to mount a Williams receiver peep sight. Much quicker, and generally more accurate to use than the standard open sights. Get it with the larger opening-twighlight aparture. Less expensive than most good scopes, too.

I think he cleans it pretty regularly, or at least he does his shotguns. I guess the sights on there will be ok for this deer season, I'm looking to get a new gun next year so no reason spending money on a low-power scope if I'm gettin hunting accuracy out of it.

I was shooting 150 grain PP, my grandpa said "thats the best there is, you dont need nothin else"[:@] He had some 180s, but he though 150 would be the best so thats all I shot. I'm goin back to shoot another box next weekend, we'll see what happens then.
hehe, I agree w/ your Gramps; 150gr PP are all you need. I shot my first buck w/ a 742 in 30/06 w/ 150gr CoreLokts; dropped him on the spot. It was a great combo.

Good luck

I didn't mean that 150 PP wasn't powerful enough or anythign but he had some 180s and other weights and types of bullets. I wanted to see if any one of them shot more accurate than the others.

Well,it would probably be a good ideato try different ammo in the rifle. Some ammo typesare simply more accurate than others in a particular rifle. That would give you more time behind the trigger too, which is not a bad thing.

BRAVO BIGCOUNTRY. You hit the nail on the head. I wish I could shoot 3"-4" groups with open sights with these old tired eyes of mine.
Tyke, get yourself another box of that same ammo your using and don't hesitate to go go deer huntin. But if I was you, I'd be sure to carry a pair of binoculars with me.
