RE: StillHunting, stalking gun
Suggest you take a look at the Remington Model 7. It's available in several good short action cartridges such as 7mm-08, and 308Win. It's lightweight, and comes with a laminated stock and blued 20" barrel. There's also a stainless/synthetic version.
Another option would be the Ruger Ultra-Light. Lightweight, blued steel, walnut stocks, and with 20" barrel. Available in 257Robts., 270Win., and
308Win.
A good Marlin lever action in 30/30 would also work.
The above noted Remington Mountain Rifle is a good one. I have one in
270Win., and it's very lightweight and accurate. It's stainless with laminated stock, and 22" barrel. It's available in 260Rem., 270Win., 7mm-08, and 30-06. Weight is approx. 6-1/2lbs. Add a lightweight scope and you can have a good outfit formaybe about 7-1/2lbs.,field ready.

Another big thing in my final choice is price, money is gonna be pretty tight this year, which is another reason I was looking at the NEF. I have a NEF in .22 hornet and for the price of the gun it is one of the best shooting, most accurate guns I have ever used. I was looking at some specs on the NEF and it shows the weight at 6 or 7 pounds so it does not seem that recoil in 270 would be too bad.
