Black scoter (melanitta nigra)

As the scientific name implies, these birds are all-black, the only such duck in North America. Standing out from their dark exterior is the bright yellowish-orange base of their bills. These birds grow close to two feet in length and live on the tundra lakes of Alaska and northeastern Canada for most of the year. (They move to the coasts in the winter.)
