New 6.5 PRC X-Bolt Pro
Last October, I bought a new rifle, my 2nd bolt action, probably 11 years apart from my first. It was supposed to arrive in early October, but apparently there was a mixup with my communication in buying it....I don't know. But anyway. I first reloaded 142 ABLR with Retumbo. I had a hunt mid November so I was very quick. I had a good amount said Retumbo worked well, so I tried. I mean it worked for very quick turn around due to trip and I wanted to bring this gun. I got it to group .8" and that was the best. Pretty disappointed but that's good enough got being quick. Bullet performance was great though. I shot a really nice 9pt at 212 yards and he dropped on the spot. I hit about an inch on the shoulder pivot, so I missed my point of impact by a few inches. But that was my fault, I should have corrected windage. Wind was blowing 25-30mph. Either way it did its job and I was impressed. A lot of people find the ABLR very hard to reload, but I thought it was pretty easy. After the hunt and now, I was able to put more time in my load development. I switched to H1000. The Retumbo wasn't that accurate and velocity was around 2790-2800, which I can live with. Once I started shooting the h1000 man it was completely lights out different. I started .050" of the lands which nosler recommends. Did my powder charge and found a solid node from 56-57g. ES and SD was practically identical in this range. All grouped .5-.553" at 100 yards. Can't really beat that and that's what I was after .5" groups. Settled at 56.8g H1000 and produces 2830-2845 fps out of my 24" barrel. Did a couple more seating tests, but decided to stick with my .050 off the lands. CBTO is 2.357". For anyone that uses the 6.5 PRC. You should definitely consider these 142 ABLR. I'm impressed. Maybe down the line I'll try to find something tighter, but .5" groups are definitely fine in my book.
