RE: GSP or Lab

I think any of the dogs mentioned can live with cats. They just have to know the rules, just like anything else they want to do that is not acceptable. I think dogs sometimes think that cats should...

RE: GSP or Lab

I also have a GSP and love hunting with him. I am in a considerably warmer climate though. A lab would probably fit your requirements better. A GSP can be an excellent water retriever but they stay...

RE: been 2 years. start this topic again

JJoel, $8 is not a lot to spend on pheasant shells. Skimping on the shells when pheasants are tough to consistently bring down is false economy. Hunting without a dog you will probably not even use...

RE: Grouse Dog

From a practical point many people use flushers such as labs to hunt grouse and do quite well. Some people even feel they can get more grouse by working quietly without any dog at all. On the other...

RE: CHAPS FOR UPLAND HUNTING

I have Filson chaps also and was surprised at what a good job they did. They make you much less reluctant to jump in and start busting brush. I think they're much better than cordura for turning...

RE: Any Help??

My lab did this for a while. I think it makes sense to them, especially if you have used duck shaped dummies for training. Also you can't really fault the dog for retrieving decoys when you were...

RE: 5 month old around guns?

At that age it is important to introduce things gradually so he doesn't acquire any permanent aversions to water or even worse, guns. Labs are not particularly sensitive usually and you should be...

The general rule is that shorter, lighter barrels are quicker to get on target and are better for quick short range shooting such as bobwhite, woodcock and forest grouse.

Longer heavier barrels...

RE: Colorado/New Mexico Blue Grouse

Well, crap. That's where I usually hunt for Blue Grouse and I didn't go this year due to the drought. Actually there were fires still burning up there when the season opened.

RE: Hunting buddies Needed - First post

I would second the idea of going to the skeet or sporting clays range. From what you said you are partly trying to use rifle type thinking and techniques which will mess you up shooting a shotgun....

RE: Can a 2 year old Lab be trained?

I started my lab at 4 1/2 years old and he turned out to be pretty good. He was very well socialized and was well trained for staying pretty close during walks, just not hunting before 4 1/2.

RE: Best bird to start with?

Another reason pigeons are good is that if you make mistakes in training the dog tends to associate that with pigeons and not gamebirds. They make the transition to gamebirds later with no problem.
