Default Can a 2 year old Lab be trained?

I bought a lab puppy 2 years ago to train, but, had an accident
and am just now able to work a dog. Didn't know if I should try
to train the 2 year old or buy another pup. The 2 year old is well manered (for not being trained) and fairly calm for a male. I don't really want a 2nd dog unless I really need to start with a pup.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

If the pup has contact with people on a regular basis and has had any training, such as sit, stay here/come, etc then it is probably possible to go into further training. If, on the other hand, he has not been taught anything and has not been with people on a regular basis then it will be tough.

Good luck

I started my lab at 4 1/2 years old and he turned out to be pretty good. He was very well socialized and was well trained for staying pretty close during walks, just not hunting before 4 1/2.

Labs are a great breed. If they want to please you, as is the case most of the time, they can be trained. You might run into a little stuborn streak in on that old, but if you keep at it, and make a game out of the training at first, he will come around. If that dog has been socialized, I am sure he will train. Besides, what have you got to loose.. Good luck..

You can teach an old dog new tricks. Just keep it fun & let the Natural abiltiy to hunt come thru. My DOgs where about 2 when they started hunting I spent a little money & sent them to a semi-pro trainer for a week he trained them & then he trained me. Both Dogs hunt pretty good.

I would suggest reading Game Dog by Richard Wolters. He does suggest traing beginning at 9 wks old, but his methods will work well with the 2 year old also. I picked up a copy at the library.
