I still use my old Marlin from time to time. It was my first deer rifle and I've taken many deer with it. I've always just used the 150 grain winchester bullets, but sometimes I have used the 170...

RE: Slugs or Buck shot for hogs?

I say slugs would be you're best bet for cleanly taking a hog with a 20ga.

RE: big game with a spear?

Try a search on atlatls. Not exactly the classic spear, more like a long arrow but it is much more effective.

Try www.thunderbirdatlatl.com and www.atlatl.com

And accuratereloading.com has...

RE: what caliber do you use

I use a 300 win mag.

Here in western Alabama the shots can be pretty short in our thick ceders and pines. When hunting the woods my average shot is around 40 yards while when I hunt our massive...

RE: Need advice on amuzzleloader.

I hear that Knight 52 caliber is suppose to be nice. I saw a guy on TV last night down an antelope at a hair over 200 yards with one.

I don't have any first hand experience though.

RE: big game with a spear?

we hunted hogs with knives and pit bulls in south georgia for years, I took a cold steel "boar spear" with me once and I found it tough to carry through the woods and swamps due to thier length....

RE: 30 30?

My first rifle was a marlin 30-30. I sold it many years ago and wish I never had. So today I traded a NEF 30-06 for an old marlin 30-30.

That little 30-30 I had never failed me on a deer. Except...

RE: Any buckshot shooters out there?

I have always used 00 buckshot with a full choke, I tried others, everything from improved to a turkey choke and the full worked best. I have a fair pattern at 60 yards but I limit my shots to well...

RE: Hog Hunting

It depends on how I'm hunting them, if it's from a treestand I use a 300 win mag or my 30-06 with 180grain silvertips. If I'm hunting with dogs I use a 10" knife and carry the 30-06 just in case one...

RE: Grizzly bear challenge, 100 yard full charge

Remember, you don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than the other folks with you.

RE: Grizzly bear challenge, 100 yard full charge

Let's see here, out of the guns in my collection?

I'd just hide behind ElKampMaster.

The only guns I have would include a 300win mag, 12ga pump, 30-06 single shot, 50 cal muzzleloader....

RE: 300 win mag

I think alot would depend on how the stock and balance of the rifle fit him. A good fitting gun can make a ton of difference. I still can't shoot a 30-06 worth a darn if it don't fit right, but my...

RE: Why doesn't my son want to use his new BB gun?

I guess I was around 11 when I got my first bb gun. I had a bow before that and shot it alot. We lived near a city and all the houses were pretty close together so I think that's why my folks waited...

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!

I just think someone is stealing your deer.

As for the ethics, I've shot deer while standing by my truck. If you're hunting for meat then I don't see anything wrong with being opportunistic...

RE: Deer skin

To get the blood out of the fur I always soaked the hide in water and washed it out either before I salted it or right before I tanned it. I don't think you should soak the hide before tanning if you...

RE: Deer skin

There are many ways to tan a hide. Saddle soap I hear works good, along with neat's foot oil, egg yolks, I've even heard of using Dove soap and mayo.

You can either buy a commercial tanning product or brain tan the hide like the native americans did. If you buy a tanning agent, then just follow the directions on the bottle. I've used "trapper's...

RE: Deer skin

That's how I've always preserved my deer hides. They'll last about forever unless they get wet. Once the hides are salted you can wait as long as you want before you tan it.

RE: What first deer gun?

For versatility, the 270 is hard to beat. If deer were the only thing you were going to use your rifle for I would say either the 243 or 6mm. The 260 is great too, but not as versatile as the more...

I just sighted in my new Browning A-bolt in 300win mag. It's a real sweet shooter. I think my setup cost about $750.00. I highly recommend Browning.

RE: Shoulder or Double lung

The issue I believe they are refering to isn' t that they are too lazy to track a deer 50 yards, it' s that if a deer runs 50 yards there is a chance another hunter will shoot the deer again and...

RE: any thoughts on Browning rifles?

Quilly,
The 300win mag is one of the hunter series. It' s got a walnut stock and blued barrel. It also wears a 3x9x40 Bushnell scope until I can get a Leupold for it.

It seems to be a great...

RE: Shoulder or Double lung

I' ve only shot one deer in the neck. Dropped him in his tracks and he was dead as a hammer.

Normally I aim for the shoulder.

I' ve always looked at them as fairly good guns, better than average if nothing else. I' ve personaly never seen one that shot bad.

Some folks won' t have anything to do with them though.

There' s pictures of youngsters with deer they got with 410 slugs in just about every issue of the Texas Trophy hunter' s Journal. So I' d say if it works fine for them, then it must work.

RE: Buckshot for deer - how effective?

I' ve used buckshot on a few deer. Never took more than one shot though. I always used federal 2-3/4" 00 in a mossberg 500 with a full choke. I' ve taken deer out to 50 yards with this setup.

RE: Bagged a buck in GA with doe grunt call

I hunted Georgia for years and the most productive call I ever used was a doe grunt. It does call in does too. The only other call that worked good for me was the " true-talker" grunt tube.
