Default 410 Slug for deer

Is a 410 slug enough to cleanly take down a deer? My 8 year old nephew has a Rossi single shot and is getting the urge. If so, what range does it have? Thanks!

That is a lil light, and you may want to check with your Laws on that cause I know here in MD you cannot use a .410... I mean with a nicely placed shot it will down a deer no problem, but with youngsters you may not get that... Even with Oldsters you sometimes don' t get it...

I agree. That slug is only the size of a single buck shot pellet. They are not legal here in NJ either. In fact, you can' t buy them in NJ that I know of. You can buy them in PA though.I use them for groundhogs in the summer.

I believe it would be enough to cleanly harvest a deer but i wouldnt push my luck on the range. Probably wouldnt be very far.

The regulations here in Alabama just say 10 ga or smaller so a 410 is legal. I just don' t want him to cripple one.

get him a 20 gauge. he wont feel the shot when he shoots a deer. 20 gauge is plenty enought to cleanly kill a deer. i have taken lots of deer with a 20 gauge and still use a 20 gauge with buckshot for drives. i can swing it alot faster and you dont need to shoot far on a drive as deer are running through trees.

There' s pictures of youngsters with deer they got with 410 slugs in just about every issue of the Texas Trophy hunter' s Journal. So I' d say if it works fine for them, then it must work.
