yea there is 2 different ways to do this. you can shoot it off a spear shooter or you can throw it at the animal yourself. i would try both... to see which i like best...

we hunted hogs with knives and pit bulls in south georgia for years, I took a cold steel "boar spear" with me once and I found it tough to carry through the woods and swamps due to thier length. Didn't get anything with it. After that my buddy at work bought the spear off of me.

I imagin that hunting over bait from a treestand would be the most effective way to hunt with one.

Or just learn to use an atlatl.

in NB, canada, my guide told me about locals that hunted with a spear for bear over bait. Thats kinda cheating though

I would love to try that. Man what a rush that would be going after bear with a spear. Over bait or not if u can get that close to a bear and keep your pants clean than you are probly gutsyer than i am. Im gunna have to try that someday.

Try a search on atlatls. Not exactly the classic spear, more like a long arrow but it is much more effective.

i actually considered this this year, when i had 20 plus deer under my stand daily for weeks. 4J in NY is infested. But, a spear is illegal in NY, says it right in the reg. book.
so no go.

I watched a bear hunting (spearing) video once. I was pretty disgusted! It doesn't look even close to a clean ethical kill to me!
