Default If you could buy a new whitetail gun...

Hey Guys, I think that I am going to buy a new whitetail gun to add to my collection for Christmas. If you had about $2000 for a rifle and scope, what would you guys buy. What a wonderful Xmas problem to have. Look forward to your advice.

Mike

I couldn't bring myself to spend 2 Grand on a gun when there are soooo many great guns out there for less than half that price. I mean, Savage and NEF are both great guns and, if the shooter does their part will produce amazing accuracy. You can pick up a BRAND NEW Savage for less that $500.00 and a new NEF for around $200. The Big Three (Winchester, Remington, And Ruger) all offer excellent guns at well under a grand. Pocket the difference so you can buy other toys.

Just my .02 Happy Hunting and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Virginia Mike,

Wow 2 thou, send some this way

Actually, I have been doing a bit of research myself. You may not be looking for an in-line, but a good friend of mine has a Savage 10ML II. He was shooting dead on from 100 yards with the scope that it came with right out of the box! I'm looking at a Savage 10MLBSS II myself and it's a great rifle. I've heard a lot of good things about 'em and the reviews are excellent. The cost is anywhere between $360.00 and $550.00 or so (depending on what you like). Add a high quality scope and your up to @ $1,000.00 +/-. Me? I probably wouldn't go that high for a scope, but who knows? I know that I get only one shot, but it's a quality shot. With some practice and a high quality scope, I hear they go 250 yards w/ a 3 and 1/2 inch drop? Can't wait to shoot my own.

p.s. You'll have @ $1,000 left over to go fishing in the Gulf of Mexico (bring a camera!)

Good luck to you,

Bn'R

I agree $2000 is alot of money to spend on a set up for hunting purpose, competition maybe. I want a new gun for christmas too but I just want a Remmington 700 in .308 and with a decent scope still under a grand. Anyway I also think a Savage would make a nice choice to add to my gun collection maybe yours too depends on what you already have.

I would find a cheap used remington 700 and have a reputable gunsmith true the action, replace the trigger unit, install a premium barrel and pillar bed it into a quality synthetic stock. Then buy the best scope and mounts that the leftover cash will allow.

Right now, if I had an adequate deer rifle....I would put my $2000 to work in the stock market!

I have always coveted a Mannlicher. But I don't know if 2 grand would be enough... especially with the exchange rate right now. But if I had 2 grand to spend on a rifle I would get a new Savage with the Accutrigger...about 500 bucks. Then get a really fantastic scope. Probably a leupold ( I don't have one but their reputation and warranty sure sound good). Then I'd spend about 1-200 bucks on Ammo at the range breaking in the barrel properly and finding out what it liked to shoot the best. And I'd have enough money left to buy the wife a pair or two of shoes so she didn't kick my monkey A@#$ for buying another rifle.

My dream gun would be a Win M-70 action, full manlicher stock, 19" barrel in 7mm-08. I think this rig would be a great looker and shooter. Oh yes a lepould 2x7 compact scope to top it off.

I just bought a new Ruger stainless composite stock 260 and new 4X leupold scope for 678.00 plus tax. I am betting it will take deer along side any other rig regardless of price..I also bought this fall a new Remington 700 ADL synthetic stocked 257 Roberts with a new Leupold 3X9 for 579.00 plus Tax. Same bet. I could have spent more but would not have gained anything in the way of a better deer hunting rig.
