I had a mossberg 500 a few years ago before I got remington 870. Killed quite a few deer with the 500, it does the job. As for the 500 I used #1 Buck, I used 00 Buck and it was not near as effective for me. To this day I still use #1 Buck even in my Remington.

i have shot tons of deer with buckshot and shot a six-pointer at 60 yards with 00 buck. i know this is far. but i had been practicing at a far distance. i was using a mossberg turkey gun with a turkey choke. 3 1/2" shell and a 12" pattern at 70 yards. good enough for me.

Since we are voicing opions I say get rid of the buckshot and get you a slug barrel, kill deer at further distances and drop them where they stand. Nothing more to say. Gabe

I' ve used buckshot on a few deer. Never took more than one shot though. I always used federal 2-3/4" 00 in a mossberg 500 with a full choke. I' ve taken deer out to 50 yards with this setup.
Buckshot doesn' t give you as good of a bloodtrail as most other means do. I have no idea what could have happened with your deer, but I don' t think the buckshot itself was the problem.

I would say that you just missed the deer. Buckshot is highly effective inside 75 yds. 3" 00 should have somewhere between 12 and 16 pellets depending on type of shell, and if you had put all of these in a 3" area on the deer you would have known if it had been hit, regardless of shot placement. So cut off your shirt tail, for you missed. But hey, it happens to us all eventually.

Man I have a hard time believeing that you can get a 3 inch pattern at 30-40 yards. I am not saying you are a lier but I just went through this with my shotgun with full and modified chokes and Could only get a 12" pattern inside of 25 yards. I tried about 8 different types of buckshot and non would do better than 12" at inside of 25 yards.
Wow I need a new shotgun.
