If you just want to catch some fish I would use a 4-5 inch minnow under a bobber on a number 2 size hook.

in minnesota a 5 to 6 pounder is very big. i have caught five 5 pounders and two 6 pounders out of a small gravel pit. my favorite are mediums sized minnowsor sunfish shaped crankbaits

i would try a bright spoon or daredevil. I have never fished for them before but if they are anything like pike they will hit a spoon. try silver, red & white, or gold if it is dirty water.
