Hey there!!! When I'm in Canada fishing for walleye and northerns I only use a jighead and a real big nightcrawler and yes I've brought in some real big beauties also. I also don't use wire leaders unless I'm trolling then I put 1 on and use a real large rapala or a crankbait. But hey thats a real dandy of a northern there. Congrats to your brother.
Just a lil pointer but if you are targeting walleye or pike i would suggest using a leader any time you are fishing for them. Cause if they inhale that hook that fish is as good as gone. Those small razor teeth will cut that line no problem, be it power pro, dacron, mono those teeth will slice right threw it. And i found that out a few times out ice fishing especially when i lose a fish and i am using a steel leader and when i bring it up i get half the leader back cause the fish chewed threw it (thats why i use titanium leaders now). I tend to use steel leaders when trolling or or spin casting but when im using bait i always use titanium cause i find they like to inhale it, but i always have some sort of metal leader between my line and lure/bait when out for sharp toothed fish.

i almost always use a leader when fishing in a lake where there are lots of northerns and especially if they are big. i have it happen all too often that a big northern swallows it and cuts off immediataly. but my dad caught a 38 in. pike without a leader so it is possible.

I agree with Lethal, it is possible to successfully land snot rockets with leaders, but your odds aren't very high. Only time I don't useleaders is when I'm using spinnerbaits, and I haven't lost one yet (5 years so far)
