You will get your chance. I think that many hunters can go a couple of years at a time without harvesting anything. Just keep at it and you will succeed. Some things that I do is that I am always out in stand/blind at least an hour before legal shooting light, I am as scent free as possible, I hunt the wind, I am as still as possible on stand all of the time and only make very slow movements if necessary, and I practice with my bow and firearm frequently. You need to try to pick spots where you will see deer, or at least give you a chance to see deer. I could go on and on. You will eventually see and take something. The best suggestion is to be out as much as you can, as you can't see/take any deer if your not in the woods.
I missed a 6 point buck with my bow yesterday @ 35 yards, but should have gotten him. Eveyone has disappointments. Good luck.

Calling could be a big help if you have had no luck with playing "the passer by." I hunted in E.Texas two weeks ago and when there was just enough light i turned over the bleat can followed by three quick grunts from the tube and within 5 min. i had 1 doe, 1 ten point (3.5), 1 eight point (2.5)and 1 four (1.5) point come out, almost in single file. it wasn't so much that the buck was looking for the grunt, but the doe looking for the bleat. just like in many parts of the season there is a time and place for every call, but the doe bleat will bring indoes, and in the rut that is what you want. During that trip i used that doe bleat to single handedly dismantle a 2.5 year old 8 point bucks senses; He was running back and forth between the cut and the woods on both sides that i was hunting intrying to find thedoe.

I would tell you that the best learing method to becoming a better hunter is trial and error.I have been hunting for 20 years now andI have made a boat load of mistakes, but the moreI made the moreI learned...do not fear failure or you are sure to.

Take a shot at trying something new, it might change your luck

Keep trying new things. The first one is always the hardest. If you have a topo map of the land you hunt on I'm sure a few people would be kind enough to give you a location where they think the deer might be. Are you taking the wind direction into consideration? If not you might want to do that. You want to be downwind from the deer. You also might want to try hutnig in the wodds some. Field stands can be good, but they are more effective at night and earlier in the season. You should look for deer droppings, rubs, scrapes, bedding areas, deer trails, and put your stand neer any of this sign. I hope this helps a little bit, and good luck trying to harvest a deer. Just hang in there!

Hey guys,

Ive been hunting for about 2 years now both bow and gun. I am usually in the woods 30-45 minutes before sun-up. I wash all of my clothes in the scent elminator detergant. I wash before i leave with the special soap. I have a climbing tree stand and usually go about 20-25 feet up. I basically follow every rule and guildline in the book to harvest a deer. In the 2 years i have been hunting i have been unsucessful in harvesting anything! Please, someone tell me what i can do better to get me one freaking deer! Tips? anything will help.

Thanks,
Steve
This is my second season with shotgun and I haven't seen or heard a deer at all while hunting for them. You've got a better shot though, as I only have a few days' window to deer hunt when college breaks and firearm seasons coincide. I have my friend's ancient 870 Wingmaster I'm borrowing. I have no special soap or detergent, just some scent killer spray and acorn-scented wafers. And I have no tree stand, just the rare tree I can climb or a single permanent stand one of my friends built. I get in early when I can, but unfortunately it is always crowded. I doubt unless I get better hunting opportunities than New Jersey's crowded public land it will take a miracle for me to even see a deer until I'm done with college. And I'm sure there are people with worse luck than mine.
