Hello AK'ns! Say, me and a couple of my buddies are planning a trip to Prince of Whales Island to hunt blackbear next spring. I was wondering if any of ya'll have hunted the island before or know much about the island, and could give me a few pointers. This is my first blackbear hunt and I've never been to that part of the world. This is a do it yourself hunt, we aren't hiring any guideservice. I was hoping to get to talk to someone that's already hunted the island, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Phish, congrats on the deer. SEAK also had some luck, and his daughter shot her second deer as well this year. Sounds like the population down there is doing well. Here's the shot of the cow moose I took right after Thanksgiving. I've got a roast in the oven as I type. [8D]

Nimrod, good to see you again the other night. Hopefully SEAK finds the strength to get past the wolverine incident last week. He sure knows how to stretch a story. I gotta hurry up and get him one so he can get off my back! Hopefully he'll have some luck tonight, he's out working the line, and I'm back in sunny Las Vegas for the holidays. I got the weight at the airlines before sending him down to the taxidermist... 42 pounds of fur and fury!

My work computer doesn't allow me to log onto this place, so I'm limited to posting while I'm at home now.

ABM/VBM - Like I said before, that is a BIG cow moose!

And that is a good-looking Wolverine, too. A week ago I heard a second-hand story about a couple of sheep hunting guys that woke up with one INSIDE their 2-man tent with them in late September. I guess it really stunk the place up before it got the Hell out of there! Luckily no one got chewed on and no holes got shot through the tent walls! LOL God, what a thing to wake up to out in the sticks!!

Good to have you back posting. Has One-Stitch gathered any more stitches lately?

No, but he is claiming that I broke a few of his fingernails. He did manage to try to poke his eye out on a blueberry bush while out deer hunting. I guess it was bad enough to call in a medivac. He's okay now though. Guess "eyesore" can be a new nickname for him.[8D]

Just had a moose roast tonight. Man, I'll be putting in for that cow permit as long as it lasts. That is some dang fine eating! SEAK is bringing home a cooler with some moose in it, maybe you can bum some from them.

Those wolverine are stinky little guys. I still have a small hint of the smell in my coat. That's why their called a skunk bear though. I've been in close proximity without knowing they were there as well, it's not a very good feeling.

GREAT PHOTOS ABM
JOHN DEER- I HAVE NEVER HUNTED POW BUT HAVE FRIENDS THAT HAVE WITH GOOD SUCCESS. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT IT GETS A FAIR AMOUNT OF PRESSURE. JUST TO THE NORTH AND EAST IS THE TOWN OF KAK A FEW YEARS AGO SOME FRIENDS WENT THERE AND SAW LIKE 70 BEARS IN 5 DAYS. I SAW VIDEO FOOTAGE AND THEY HAD LOTS OF SIGHTINGS AND HAD LOCALS WANTING THEM TO SHOOT SOME BEARS RIGHT IN TOWN. JERRY FLETCHER OF FLETCHERS ARCHERY IN WASILLA I THINK HAS HUNTED BOTH OF THESE AREAS. EITHER OF THESE AREAS WOULD BE EASIER TO HUNT IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A SKIFF.....EVEN A 10 FOOT INFLATABLE WITH A SMALL KICKER WOULD BE OF GREAT VALUE. THERE ARE FOREST SERVICE CABINS IN BOTH THESE AREAS BUT USUALLY MORE HEAVILY HUNTED NEAR THESE. POW HAS LOTS OF LOGGING ROADS SO MOBILTY IS EASIER THERE IF YOU RENT A VEHICLE. GOOD LUCK

SEAK was pulling the trap line tonight since neither of us will be able to check it until we return in January. He had good luck on a foot hold set with a wolverine in it! He said the critter was pretty worked up and pissed off.

Been a great trapping year already, and it's just beginning, still have 3 and a half months to go once we get the line triggered up again.

AK NIMROD,

I really appreciate the suggestions and tips. I will definatly try to get into the area around KAK, and we are planning on staying in one of the cabins and renting a skiff to enable us to get to some of the less pressured areas. Thanks again.

john deer- you are welcome that part of the state typical has larger bears.shorter, milder winters and higher protein diets. bring good rain gear....gortex will last about one day... if you are staying in a cabin you will be able to dry out nightly....big plus
i hunt prince wm sound and we get pretty good bears but they are generally bigger down there. be sure to let us know how you do. if cruising the beaches remember that it is illegal there to shoot from boats.

Thanks again for the info AK NIMROD. I will definately keep you posted on my results. I do have a good set of raingear to bring along. Although I wasn't aware of the law about not shooting from the boat, I wouldn't have done that anyway. It's like road hunting here, it's illegal, but even if it wasn't there's not really any sport in it. Thanks for the reminder. I am really looking forward to the trip up north. Just being able to experience the sights and the hunt itself will make the trip a success. Taking a bear is just icing on the cake. Thanks
