Default Wyoming Rifle Hunting question

I would like to get some information about hunting from a treestand in the state of Wyoming with a rifle. I realize that there is a lot of open space out there that is void of trees, but i am going to NE Wyoming. The ranch I will be hunting is on the edge of the black hills with plenty of trees. So, is there anyone that can tell me for sure if a person can hunt from a treestand with a rifle in Wyoming. Thanx

i don't see why you wouldn't be able to hunt from a tree, never heard anyone say you couldn't. the terrain is much different out west, on my place there are several areas of high ground where i can see for miles ...no reason to climb a tree. in addition, don't think you're going to find alot of hardwoods like you would out east, on my place it's pine and grass ...very easy to still hunt without making allot of noise and such. i don't even wear camo when i rifle hunt.

If I remember right, it was illegal to rifle hunt out of a tree in Wyoming at one time, but I think that law is now longer in affect. Don't quote me on either of those things for sure. Someone else hopefully will know for sure.

I' ve never read anything that says you can' t hunt out of a tree.

When I hunt bear over bait I get in a tree. It keeps me out of trouble when a grizz comes in.

I have been hunting in that same area a few times, just off the black hills in the town of Big horn, and a tree would not be my first choise to be set up in. we hunt the first part of Nov. for whitetails and the wind chill is around -10 to -20 I try to find a wind break of some kind to set up, round bales of hay, or make you a ground blind from plywood we have one that we tote up there every year and have shot alot of bucks from it. If the weather is on your side then the tree stand would be a great place. I see no reason why a tree stand would differant than a ground blind. if it isnt in the proclamation then it should be O.K. good luck this year on the draw. shed horn

The state of Wyoming does not allow permanent tree stands or over night cache in national forests.. I bring a climber when I have patterned my animal. Usually , spot and stalk or ground blinds seem to be more effective in the more pressured N.F. areas, but when in the wilderness areas, if you can get a stand in the backcountry, a light climber is the way to go, it could take time to get in place, but many big game animals have been harvested from trees in Wyoming. Good luck. crobride

I live in Gillette, WY. We don' t use tree stands normally. A windmill is good for antelope tho. ' bout all you see are evergreens in the mountains here. Tough to climb, tough to see or shoot through. I can' t sit still, but when I try, it' s on the ground with a tree, bushes, or rock behind me to break up my outline. There are many places to do this on the top of or part-way up the side of gulleys or smaller valleys. We usually still-hunt. Not standing still, but taking 1,2, or 3 steps at a time, pausing in the open, or better yet, at something to break up your outline to meticulously scan the areas in front, to the sides, and even behind us as we cover ground slowly. hope this helps!

P.S. Sorry, I shouldn' t have said we. As you can see from crobride' s letter above this, there are tree stands used here. Crobride' s from Jackson, where they have trees, in Gillette, no trees, just wind! lol.

Yes you can hunt with a rifel in a tree stand in WY. It my only be in selected areas. Eithor way I know in the NE you can. I am going on a lateNov. whitetail hunt with an outfitter in Sheridan this year. He has told me I have the option of spot and stalk or tree stand. I' ll take his word for it. Good luck to you as well.
