Where I hunt in SE Minn and SW Wisconsin, I've always hunted private and don't believe there is much for public but I could be mistaken. There is alot of competition from other hunters asking the farmers for permission and the land I do hunt, although private, gets hunted continiously throughout the season so the birds are spooky. I don't use decoys much because I've seen alot of gobblers run the other way when they see them.
In the black hills I've hunted public land the two years I've been out there.

In this part of Pa. private ground gets hunted as heavy as public. If you're a local it's rare to be told no as far as permission goes.Add that to the trespassers and it can get down right crowded. But I hunt both public and what I call semi private.

Paul,I know what you're sayin about N.Y. I had it in my head to hunt N.Y. once.Spent a whole weekend tryin to get permission in S.W. N.Y. No luck but almost every land owner told me they already had a # of hunters goin to be on their property.

Paul & Jim the word no is expected around these parts because private ground is where the major majority of our birds are, consequently the hunters too!Clubs,,leases, and the fact that the 2 countys I hunt are loaded with families that love to hunt presents the biggest challenge in turkey huntin around our parts!Wasn't that way years ago but folks have figured out wildlife can pay the taxes...

i hunt both here in indiana im lucky enough to have landed 770 ac last season in southern in aaaaaaaaaalllll to my self...........a bag of mushrooms to the land owner does wonders....and a huge shed antler to boot........now its all mine......i agree there are more turkey on public land but ive killed bigger ones on private, but to me private land is more like turkey hunting, they respond to calls better.....on public land i feel like im deer hunting cause you dont call, and they run from the decoys.....so your better to wait them out, like deer.........and calling and the responce is what does it for me in turkey hunting.......so i guess its personnel pref..........i dont just like to kill them i like to work them

Stalker, you or anyone else who can say they hunt their own land are truly blessed. Congratulations...I hope to join that group some day.
I hunt on 975 acres of public WMA, 1700 acres of Naval Air Station land and as of last week, exclusive use of 400 acres of private land. Although the land is not mine, I consider myself fortunate.

You are welcome any time to hunt with myself or by yourself on my land. Between my two properties, I have a little over 180 acres of open and woodland landscape. right now, i am keeping numbers on the flocks, and taking photos of the older, more prominent Toms.
