coyotes with .243
I have a .243 and I was wondering what is the maximum range for coyotes. I was thinking around 300 yards but I've heard you can shoot them at longer ranges. I have a .243 Rossi single shot with a 3-9X40 and I am pretty good with it. Any help would be appreciated.

They will kill a coyote as far as u feel comfy shooting. 500yds with a 243 i severly doubt that buckmaster maybe u need a range finder sure it wasnt 300 and u just cant judge yardage cuz geesh 500yds thats really far for even a ultra mag let alone a 243 with a lightweight slug. Guess anything is possible though i suppose...

i think 500 might be alittle to far because at that range a 100gr bullet drops 40inches and with 75gr bullet it drops 30 inches at that range. plus it would be damn hard to see one at that distance. I saw a yote shot at 250 yard with a 243 just last week it rolled the yote over. if you have your rifle sighted in correctly i would say 300 yards would be preatty good. it dependson your scope power and where the rifle is sighted in at.

In terms of consistant hitting and I suppose if you had a farily good rest 300-350 is about as far as you should aim for. Past that there are just way to many variables that can really throw off your shot. I'd keep it under 300 really though.

My buddy is a die-hard varmint hunter and with his custom heavy barrel .243 and handloads he wont hesitate to shoot at a yote from 1-600 yards. The first time he told me i just laughed at him but he sure proved me wrong.
Im not a big varmint hunter but i just use my 30-06. Its great because it gives me excellent practice so when i go for deer and elk I can be confident in making shots anywhere from 50-250 yards

it all depends on you and your gun.how you have it sighted and how good you think you nerves are.I try to hold my shots to 300 yards.I did take a coyote at 440 yards once.didn't have anything to lose,so I gussed at the holdover and he fell.I knew the range and wanted to get him out of the pasture.I took another at 320 yards with a good solid rest.I had the yote in the scope and could see a cow that had just had a calf in the edge of the scope.(I shoot 80 grain PSP Winchester ammo)
you need to know the distance and the drop at that range,or have a good dial scope.
good luck on getting it ranges set, that the fun ;setting the scope and getting it all together.I love to shoot long range.I'm not all that good at it,.but thats the fun,"trying".

It all depends on how good a shot you are. I'll shoot at 'em out to 440 yds. (the distance across a 40 acre field) any time , don't hit very many though. Out past about 200 yds. the wind is really going to get ahold of your bullet so you've got to take that into account. But a .243 will kill 'em if you can hit 'em.

You can kill the coyote with the .243 about as far as you can see him, but in reality if you are calling them in you will rarely get shots out past 350 yards. The .243 shooting a 55 grain ballistic silvertip sighted in at 200 yards will be about an inch high at 100 and 3.5 inches low at 300 and just about a foot low at 400 yards. The wind drift at 300 yards with a 10 mph crosswind will be right about 7 inches. I have shot them out to distances of 700 yards using this rifle and ammo combination, and as close as 5 steps...
