My best experience in carbon has been the Gold Tip and Carbon Express. Worst has been Beman which does much the same as you have described.

I can only speak to Idaho. I saw well over a hundred in a 5 day hunt there 2 years ago but the closest I got was 80 yards. Very tough country with combined 5 to 8 thousand feet of altiude changes...
