I hunt every year with a friend who uses a 300mag on white tail and he has never dropped adeer on the spot, we are always tracking his deer. He gets em in the boiler room every time but the bullet just passes through with little or no expansion. I have shot two deer in the last two years both with a SKS and dropped em on the spot with shots in the boiler room. My friend thinks the reason is because of the power of the 300 mag. Just mt 2 cents.

If you want a Hammer. Then shoot them in the neck with a 270 or a 7 mag..

If you want something to lift them off of their feet , Then use the 416 mags.

I personaly use a 7 mag myself for Elk. Allthough this next year I am going to call upon my 338 RUM. I have to see how it fairs on these big critters.

I have been known to hit Elk in the neck more than once with my trusty 7 mag. To tell the truth the only dir. they tend to go is straight down.

Those that take Neck shots,
What do you mean by neck shot? At what part of the neck do you aim at and at what distance ?

Only Elk 5x5 I have ever truly hammered was hit with a White Superslug 460 grain .50 cal at 1200 fps and it literally blew him down. Same hunt 3x3 Mulie at 125 yards same bullet same load result Mulie lying on back with feet in the air.

Big, wide, heavy bullets have a way of doing that....
Not very sexy, but real "thumping" ability....

Since they aren't usually travelling at hyper-velocity often the shooter can actually hear his own bullet's impact, K-thump, like hitting the pommel of a saddle with a five pound sledge with a full "overhand" swing --- it is a heart warming sound to a hunter and devastating to game. The British figured this out in Africa at the turn of the last century.

Bullet thump is one of the nicer sounds one can hear.

Amen to that. You hear it with almost any caliber if your listening for it which I always do. I like to know if the bullet hit the animal just in case it does not go down in its tracks. The big slower heavy bullets and the light fast bullets both do the job when shot placement is correct. However the big heavy bullets are more forgiving of less than perfect shot placement. IN MY OPINION. This battle of speed VS Bullet weight and size has raged on forever. Weatherby's Idea was WHY NOT BOTH. You can't go wrong with that therory but shot placement will always be the determing factor. My idea has always been to use a weapon with enough ME or TKO to do the job but it has to be within one ability to place the shot with such a weapon. A good hit with a 260-270 is more effective by far than a poor placed shot with a 460 Weatherby. I used bigger guns when my shoulder was in shape to handle it. With the bad shoulder I have had to scale down the recoil in order to place my shots where I want them. If and when I can no longer place my shots, I will hand my guns down to the kids and go along and watch. Good Hunting.

I cant believe that I have only seen one 45/70 mentioned. A 405 grain bullet from a buffalo bore round is about as hard hitting as a frieght train. It will remove the finger prints from your rifle !!
