Elk Hammer
#35
I have an Encore in 45-70. also an NEF and a Marlin. The loads listed by Hornady for the Ruger NO. One are really thumpers. I have done quite a bit of hunting with a 35 Remington Contender. I had a 35 Whelen Pump many years ago. I sold it after I got married and money was tight for a few years. I don't know what all states have Elk but its safe to say that most of them reside in the Western states and a lot of canada.

50 BMG = 33 pounds, relevant factor, if you have ever hunted elk before. Not much of a hammer if you can't pick it up and shoot offhand on a three second opportunity. Shooting from the pickup window or pickup box don't count!
270Win = Nice cross over* rifle, it was my first high power @ 14; worked great on prairie dogs as well as coyotes and antelope. Nice lil ole gun.
* = Continuum: varmit rifles, deer rifles, crossover rifles, elk rifles, elk hammers, ....
Regrettably, the topic is "elk hammers"

I have my brother's .30-378 Weatherby Magnum in storage. He keeps encouraging me to take it deer hunting. I believe that's a bit much for Virginia whitetail. He has recently bought some land in Colorado and has Elk on his property so, I'm sure he will help it "spread it's wings" before too long. I feel confident that if you can hit your mark with that weapon, it will leave a big footprint. I really dont' want to shoot it I can fire my 30-06 all day but I don't want to shoot something that has 3 1/2 times the recoil energy of the '06 with 180 grainers. If I ever get to take that grizzly hunt I've been dreaming of, I'll ask to use his rifle. Geez. I must be getting old.
