On your low, and back, hit that dropped the cow elk...if you had to anchor another elk with one shot would you shoot it intentionally in that spot? I'll guess you would say no.
All kinds of things that shouldn't happen do happen. That's the reason I suggest playing the percentages.

If a 300 Weatherby mag isn't a hammer, I guess the animals you shot with it weren't suceptible to being hammered in the first place.

RE: Elk Hammer
ive used 280 win and rem and they are great guns for elk. given they wont know an elk ass over tea kettle. for longer range i switched to a 300 weatherby and love it. lots of power for those longer shots. killed few elk with both. like either gun. just my .02 cents worth

Let me tell you something. Range means something too. a .270 will put an elk down faster than you could ever blink with a neck shot. The last elk i see shot was with a 7mm Remington Mag hit it in the neck at 120 yds and it dropd like a safe. Thats where to hit em.

Norby,
No, I wouldn't aim "there", of course, I didn't aim there then either, that is just where the bullet hit (thus the myth of shot placement). When things don't go "internet perfect" is when a hammer can help out.
=================
In general,
two kinds of "hammers":
(1) Big and bad, based on hyper velocity and medium weight bullets (looks wonderful in the "energy" column of the ballistics charts and great on deer)
(2) Truly big in diameter and heavy in weight of bullet with medium/fast velocity....
Two different effects,
I refer you to the Taylor Knock Out Index...

RE: Elk Hammer
If you want HAMMER I'd say 338's and up. 338ultra mag, 338win mag, 8mmrem mag, 340wheatherby mag, ect.. A 270 wont HAMMER ANY ELK, EVER. it may drop em but it wont HAMMER them. I know a guy who uses a 45-70 and says they go NO WHERE when hit. Bottom line, bigger bullet = HAMMER POWER.

RE: Elk Hammer
As previously noted, proper shot placement is the key. Many cartridges are adequate for Elk, from .270Win. on up. When I lived in Wyoming two of the most popular seemed
to be the 7mm Rem. Magnum, and the 30-06. The .338 Win Mag. was a good Elk cartridge too. But, for a "hammer", I'd recommend the .375 H&H Mag. - still requires good shot placement though.

If I recall the taylor KO formula is the bullet wt. in grains times the velocity in fps times the caliber in decimal divided by 7000 for grains per lb. It been a long time since I have worked with this stuff so don't hold me to that. The info should be available on the webb someplace I once saw a chart on some site that had all the popular caliber combos listed. As they say though the memory is the first thing to go and I don't remember what is second.
