New deer rifle.....
Hello. My name is Josh. I am from Southwest Mississippi and I hunt whitetails. I am going to purchase a new rifle before next deer season and am thinking on a .300 Winchester Magnum (NOT the SHORT MAGNUM!)
I was worried about recoil at first, but then shot my cousin's Browning A-Bolt Stainless/Synthetic and I love the way that cartridge shoots. I need help in choosing a rifle. I need your opinions on this cartridge, and a rifle. I am currently looking at the Browning A-Bolt Stainless Synthetic, or the Remington Model 700 Stainless Synthetic with Detachable box magazine. I am thinking of using the Remington Express 180 Grain Core-Lokt Pointed Soft point factory load. I need your opinions on what to get. Is this load good for deer from 20-400 yards? Please help me with all of your opinions on the cartridge, and the rifles I have mentioned. Thanks,

Welcome to the board B.A.Josh.The 300 Win Mag is allot of gun for whitetails. The Browning A Bolt, Remington 700 are both great guns.Don't over look the Ruger's and Winchester's.Depending on the kind of money you want to spend.Sako's & Weatherby's are top of the line also. The Remington "Core Lokt" are well made ammunition. When you get your new rifle you may want to try different bullets weights and brands to see which one shoots the best.I hope you find a rifle that fits your needs. Good luck Ruger Redhawk

RE: New deer rifle.....
There's a guy who comes up to my camp every year with a .300 WM, and a .30-06. Uses both--depending on his mood, and whether or not he's walking through the woods on a drive, or sitting on a stand.
Personally, I'd use a .300 WM on something a bit larger than a whitetail, but, to each their own.
BTW--welcome to the board!

WELCOME ABOARD JOSH, PERSONALY I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A 300WIN AS DEER GUN. MY FATHER LIVES IN LAUREL MS. AND USES EITHER A 300 WIN OR A 7MM REM FOR THOSE LONG PIPELINES. AS FAR AS THE GUN I HAVE A MEDALION IN 7MM AND A SENDERO SF IN 300ULTRAMAG THE MEDALION IS A LITTLE LIGHT FOR MY TASTE LEADING TO SOME RECOIL. BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND THE SENDERO OR SENDERO SF IN 300WIN.

did the ablot have a boss system? if so thats y the recoil wasnt too much...a normal gun it could be too much....i myself would take a abolt over a 700 neday...the bullets...i wont say a word about corelokts cept a few bad expirences led me to not buying another box for hunting...and for a 400 yds shot id say a premium bullet should be used..and a boattail..like a nosler ballistic tip boat tail...but if you dont want to spend the money on them..dont buy em..shot what shoots up to your standards.....and welcome to the board!

The 300 win mag is not my choice for a whitetail gun...but it is more than capable. Just pick your bullets wisely.
We have a fellow that comes down from Canada every year to hunt in WV with us. He shot a big 9-pt this year with the same bullets he uses on moose. I have pics of the hole it left...looked like he hit it with a mortar shell...(Can't remember what bullet he used)
That said, I really like the Browning A-bolt. However, you may want to shoot one first. The recoil with some 300 win mags is more than noticeable.
GOOD LUCK!
