This is just my perspective and opinion and I have stated it previously. I don't think Jeff is being selfish at all.He is offerring something to someone,it is an invitation that is being given generously. The fact that a limitation has been placed on the offer wouldn't bother me in the least. When someone gives you a gift do you complain that it wasn't bigger or different? No you accept it graciously with enthusiasm or you thank them for the offer but politely decline.
I love to hunt and given available time I would hunt with all the good folks I could and take as many folks out as I could.I am a selective buck hunter but I love to hunt and spend time with people who have the same passion.I would have no problem being excited about a doe hunt.
As far as letting a buck walk under the restrictions that were accepted and agreed upon,I would have no problem.Your word is your word and integrity is integrity. Not just when it is easy, but when it takes character. If I don't have my word I have nothing!

Or maybe the bucks in your area don't like to eat your farmer Friends beans. I see no reason for you to place limits on what others shoot on land that you presently don't own.
I do these things....not because I hunt there....but because he's a man I admire.
So....even though your constant reference to land ownership has nothing to do with the scenario......I have the landowner's permission to hunt it as I see fit. He's told me he feels better knowing I'm there looking out for his interests.....and if it were for sale (at this time or any time in the future).....it's well-known that I am interested.
Again, though....NOTHING to do with the scenario.

I too am selfish. I invited several of my friends over for a cookout. I fixed a bunch of venison burgers, hot dogs and chicken along with baked beans, and cole slaw. One of my friends said, I appreciate what you'r e offering me, but I know you have steaks in the freezer,so I will be honest and tell you that I am going to turn my nose up at your menu and that I am going to help myself to one of those steaks---and I hope you won't mind. I did. How selfish can I be!

That is why i only take good freindswith me when I hunt. I love it when my buddies bag a big deer. The biggest buck taken from my land was taken from a good friend of mine that doesnt hunt much. Go figure. I have not had to worry about thinning does in the last 8 years, so I keep my invites with people I respect. As for your situation, I feel it is rather selfish of them to insist they will take a buck agianst your wishes. Ive been invited to thin does on land before with the same instructions you have given. I have also passed up nice bucks out of respect for the land owner. I was invited to thin does, not shot their bucks, so that is where I leave it. No buck is worth the disrespect Id be showing by going agianst their wishes. Hell, they should be happy for the invite.

This is what really bothers you, bawana, isn't it (that I don't own the land)? You have no idea of my relationshipwith the landowner. I've been friends with him for longer than I've been hunting his land. I hunt there and his family DOESN'T. I mow his family cemetery that abutts my property. I take him things form the garden. I help him mow the land. I helped him build one of his sheds. I ride his grandaughter on the ATV. I've offered to pay the taxes on the land.
I do these things....not because I hunt there....but because he's a man I admire.

We as hunters expect others to all have the same expectations & goals which is just ridicules. Time restraints ,family and other responsibility's prevent most from spending the time & money it takes to enjoy a complete season .
If a guy I was hunting with let the biggest buck of his life walk because I told him it was off limits to all but myself It would not be something I would be very proud of.That saidanyone that is hunting with me has a chance at a legal deer and is successful we will party till the cows come home. If it's got spots ,three legs and is blind in one eye. or a twenty inch ten point I'm buying the beer.[8D]

I think it's clear (of course...it has been for some time ).
I can't offer a hunt with strings.....lest I be declared "selfish". So....these guys lose an opportunity to hunt. I've always thought "something" was better than "nothing".....but I at least gave them a choice.
"I ain't payin no fifty cents for no coke! Heyyyy.....then you ain't gettin no coke!"
No hard feelings. (If you saw Caddyshack....you might know that line)

Nobody answered this question.
What is different in this scenario?

What is different in this scenario?
Tell me what the difference is in this scenario:
You get invited to a big time lease or outfitter to take a management buck. 8 points or less......3.5 yrs or more.
Are you gonna look that outfitter in the eyes and tell hm you'll shoot the 150" 2.5 yr old if you "want to"?
His lease/ranch. He can (obviously) shoot whatever he wants....but he has a need to cull a certain "class" buck.

That's part of the difference.
I think it would be appropriate for an outfitter to put restrictions, even on what he would allow his friends to shoot, because that is his livelihood. He wouldn't tell them "no" because he wanted it himself. That's where I, IMHO, think the selfish part comes into play.
Still, I believe you have the right to tell them whatever you want, just as they have the right to tell you whatever they want in rebuttal, but ultimately the decision is yours whether they come or not. Just motive we're talking about here. Not legitimate action.

Obviously more people here thought you were not selfish and THEY were, so, I'd say there has been no official declaration of "selfishness".
Either way, at least your not shooting deer in the head with your Bow, That's really hard to advocate for
Take care.

Yes I see land ownership as the biggest threat to hunting as we know it. in many areas it is impossible to find any where to hunt & the only way to reverse this trend is for hunters to buy land & respect others whom already do. What You are doing is no different than western states that charge outlandish fees for out of state hunters who are hunting land that the general public owns. Its supply and demand. You have something others don't , and that is permission , plain and simple. Some would call this blackmail.
