Where's John Mussacchia(sp?) the muzzy dude? I would really like to hear what he says about this. Did they have a bad batch, etc? I like the heads and mine are flying great. I haven't hit a heavy shoulder with this particular head to test it, though. You know it is a pretty good design since many of the others are close to copies. I wish they would make the ferrule out of titanium like the Rocky mtn TI-100's. Or make it out of steel and make it skinnier to keep the weight the same. I'm not a fan of too much aluminum. They should offer models with a higher grade of aluminum for extra $$ if you're going after bigger game.

You should retitle your thread. The Muzzy didn't let you down, you let the broadhead down by missing the deer.
MOCraig, I doubt any head hitting the exact same way would have faired much differently. I don't care what head someone uses, sooner or later someone had a bad experience with it. That goes for all equipment. I've used Muzzy's for more than ten years now. I've missed, hit bone, ect......it's never the broadheads fault, as in your situation, you weren't in the vital area, so we can't blame the head now can we.

I'm not quite sure I care for your tone, but I'm fairly certain after re-reading my own posts that I've made it clear I don't blame the Muzzy entirely. I hit the deer in the shoulder, and the arrow fell out. It was not ideal shot placement, and I've said that it may have happened with any head. I will say that I shot a buck in Missouri this season with a Slick Trick 100-grain and it penetrated the shoulder quite nicely.
I think the Muzzy "Bad to the Bone" ad slogan is a bit misleading, and wanted to share my own experience.

OK, this one is going to have to go to arbitration. Matt says MoCraig is a failure. MoCraig says that Muzzy is a failure. Hmmmmmmmm..... I abstain. All I'll say is that with that set up and with an arrow flying true, it shouldn't have happened. I'd venture to say we'll never know for sure... but we don't have all the info and never will. The broadhead would perform better under worse conditions normally... and I'm not a Muzzy man. I shoot Thunderheads. This is not a normal happening. Something goofy.

No head is indestructable...none! Any broadhead can bend, break blades, and not perform as it should under unusual conditions. Hitting a shoulder blade is an unusual condition because that is not where the shot was intended. Hitting a shoulder blade happens because we are not perfect. I am not blaming anyone, it just can happen.
Hitting a shoulder blade dead on is almost as bad as hitting a rock. I have yet to see anyone locally shoot any broadhead through the shoulder blade of a large whitetail deer. I have seen them lodged, but not shot through a shoulder blade on a direct hit. We have some big deer in Illinois, a shoulder blade on a big buck is like hitting stone. No Muzzy failures yet for me, too much success with it. Now a failure because of a bad hit is not any broadhead's fault.

I may be off by one ,but I have taken 34 deer with Muzzy heads. I have had one blade bend and one blade break in all those deer.I have never had any damage to the body of the broadhead. In fact I remove the blades, clean them reassemble the broadhead and sharpen them to the point that I can shave hair with them and use them again. A friend said that I was cheap and shoud use new broadheads but with the QUALITY of the product my way keeps working. Two people that I know have switched from another popular brand after see my results.Good Hunting!!

tobyn, if you make a bad shot or miss and hit something behind it just right, any broadhead made can and will bend, break a blade, etc. Geeze! Some people just don't get it.

MOCraig,
You totally missed my "tone". It wasn't meant as a cyberslap, just an observation. The shot on the Missouri buck wasn't the same as the one with the Muzzy. I've blown through the shoulder bone of whitetails with Muzzy's as well with Hoyt bows. All different circumstances. I'm also sure the slick Trick will serve you very well, but I'd bet there are bad stories on them as well....again, not a cyberslap...just an observation. PS, I don't think I had a chance to welcome you to the board, the more you visit, I think we'll be fine, after all, your post said you shot a Hoyt Striker Redline at 68lbs..I had one of those....so.....You can't be all bad.

Thanks for responding, Rob. I guess I took your post the wrong way. I have heard (I believe it was even on this board) a couple of bad stories regarding the Slick Trick. I can't say I'm totally sold on them just yet, but I do like them a great deal.
I just cannot use another Muzzy after that instance, for whatever reason. I accept the fact that the Muzzy is probably one of the best broadheads out there. I still think there may have been an issue with the head, even if it was just that particular head on the end of my arrow that day.
Regardless, thanks again for responding. I've moved on from the Striker, and am now shooting a 70# Hoyt Havoctec with the Versacam. I love it.
