To shot a deer on the outside of his shoulder when quartered towards you is very pathetic irresponsible shot placement.
Show me the page in the hunting manual Phil. Your using some might big words here Phil---very pathetic irresponsible--- are not endearing terms in most polite conversation. They tend toprovoke people into heated exchanges andare equivalent to calling someone a slob hunter on this forum--I have not seen manyslob folks on this forum. Why would you do that Phil, unless you think your a god of shooting and all knowing in shooting sports, are you?Your responses indicate you think so, since your so conviced your way is the only way to shooting.

That is a really nice looking rifle... I am not real good at identifying the older generation of guns, what is it for sure? Is a cartridge gun as I suspect? How about a full pic of the gun...
I like the sight on the rifle, it looks beautiful from what I see. Chap

To Sabotloader: The rifle is an 1885 Browning. And the caliber is a 45-70. I do not have a larger picture. Here is a picture of a new Sharp's I am playing with right now. Tom.

Chap,

Pathetic and irresponsible describes that kind of shot placement very well I think. It is pathetic because I pity the animal which much endure it. It is irresponsible because someone has failed to accept the responsibility of placing a dependable, accurate, and lethal shot.

Some people lose lots of deer. Others don't. In my opinion, when one loses a deer, it is always their fault. Sorry if that ruffles your feathers. But frankly, I don't see any other way to look at it. Its my opinion that when one takes on this personal responsibility, the problems of unrecovered game go away. I think you will find that most people who don't have problemsthink this way.

To Frontier: I have only put about 75 rounds through it so far. I have not shot it off a bench yet. I am pouring a 405grain bullet cast from wheel weights. I have been shooting chunk rock on the strip job that is close to my house. I have walked the sights in on a couple of rocks at 375 yards(ranged). Shooting off sticks I can hit the rocks most of the time. The rocks are about two foot square, and I am shooting off of shooting sticks. It really is alot of fun too shoot. The riflehas a 34 inch barrel, and weighs over 13 pounds. Carrying for me is not a problem. I am a handicapped hunter, and I do all my hunting off my modified Kawasaki Mule. My Kawasaki does not have any problem hauling the rifle around. Tom.

1885, is that a ML or a BP cartridge gun. I suspect a cartridge gun, but it does shoot BP right,or does it shoot smokeless? It looks beautiful, and is an industrial strengthgun. Chap Gleason

Phil,
Sure, every shot is personal responsibliity---- the hunter pulled the trigger and deceided to take the shot and selected the bullet he chose and sighted in the rifle and knows the distance for his furtherest lethal shot. All those are factors in the shot. The game laws in my state say youmust be shooting at game when you pull the trigger, not sound, not movement, at game. Many shooting books that I have seen show different shots on deer, elk, moose, bear and cape buffalo, all of them show a quarting to or a brisket shot as a good shot even on a cape buffalo. In fact I just saw such a picture layout less then 3 months ago in Outdoor life on Cape buffalo, so I agree shot placement is critical in fact #1, but so is bullet selection. I believe Mike's shot was legal, responsible, accurate and deadly, not pathetic and irresponsible. It differs from what you would take, that is all, but to label it as "pathetic and irresponsible" is pathetic and irresponsible in my opinion.
Chap
