To shot a deer on the outside of his shoulder when quartered towards you is very pathetic irresponsible shot placement.
Show me the page in the hunting manual Phil. Your using some might big words here Phil---very pathetic irresponsible--- are not endearing terms in most polite conversation.
Chap,

Pathetic and irresponsible describes that kind of shot placement very well I think. It is pathetic because I pity the animal which much endure it. It is irresponsible because someone has failed to accept the responsibility of placing a dependable, accurate, and lethal shot.

Some people lose lots of deer. Others don't. In my opinion, when one loses a deer, it is always their fault. Sorry if that ruffles your feathers. But frankly, I don't see any other way to look at it. Its my opinion that when one takes on this personal responsibility, the problems of unrecovered game go away. I think you will find that most people who don't have problemsthink this way.
