Default Questions for hog hunters

Debating on whether or not to go on a archery hog hunt in Iowa, I know it would be fun, but I' m wondering how the meat is?
Is a sow better tasting than a boar?

What do you with the meat? sausage? roasts? chops?
My fear is if I shoot a big boar will I be disappointed in meat quality???

Thanks for all advice!

Hog hunting is a blast especially if you use a bow! It' s a great offseason fix when the hunting bug hits ya. Here in Texas we shoot a lot of hogs. In fact, I' m going out this weekend and hope to add another to the freezer.

In answer to your question, the smaller the hog the better the taste!

Adult sows taste better than Boars.

As far as cuts of meat, I keep the loins hole, keep a couple of hams and the rest goes into sausage.

I just finished my last hog Bowhunt of 7 for a video @ Shilo in Oklahoma. I have a 100 & 150 pounder in freezer & they taste great-I have a 250#+ at the butchers now. I have chops, Loins & Hams smoked-rest into breakfast sausage. If you are planning on Iowa I would give Coal Creek farms in illinois a call-great hunting & some big hogs-I took one there in Jan.. If you are going to North Star in Iowa I would try Coal Creek in Ill. 1st (about the same distance) IF he has an opening. Pat cell 217-202-9863 or 217-275-3516. Good Luck

Condition of the animal has more impact on meat quality than gender or age.
If they are skinny then they will taste rank.
Have eaten some big Boars that taste fine.
Remember to cut the nuts out as soon as you kill the animal. (Male)
Also no need to hang. Freeze it down sooner the better.
i.e. Unlike Deer/Elk etc.

Best meat is in the arse end.
Agree with comments above. Loins Hams and sausage the rest.
Good luck with your hunt.
