Questions for DMU 61 hunters.
I think we have a few unit 61 hunters here (Buffalo, Trempealeau counties, et al).
1) About where in the DMU do you hunt (i.e. nearest town, direction from it, etc)?
2) In your opinion, the best deer processing in the unit (assuming you have nay processed over that way)?
3) Best spot to go for a cold one after the hunt?
4) Do you think the deer population is higher, lower, or about the same as a few years ago?
...Just curious!
Myself, the answers are...
1) I am fortunate enough to have two spots: one just northeast of Arcadia, about halfway to Independence. The second one is southeast of Arcadia, not too far from Brush' s Lodge.
2) I have had pretty good luck over the years at Pat' s Country Market in Arcadia, but recently went to Maloney' s Baloney. Great beer sticks there!
3) I take a tour or two to see what has been brought in for contests. I Arcadia, go to Dan' s Bar for that. Also take some trips over to Waumandee...can' t remember the name of the place. Nearest hangout for us is Newcomb Valley Bar. Simple, unassuming, and the beer is cold!
4) Lower, but that isn' t all bad. Used to have WAY too many does. We thinned them out some, but in some areas the t-zone and ag tags took too many. Plus, I saw plenty of buck fawns at registration stations during the t-zone hunts .[:' (]

RE: Questions for DMU 61 hunters.
1. I hunt just North of Praag mainly, I also do a bit of hunting over towards Urne.
2. Waumandee isn' t too bad, if you go there, make sure to have some little curts made, Excellent.
3. We usually head to Mondovi, Gilmanton, or Durand. The bar in Waumandee is called the Waumandee House.
4. In our area, the deer population has remained about the same, but in the Western part of the county, the pop. has exploded. It was nothing to see 400 deer in a night durning the winter this year. I also have a uncle who owns land on the eastern part of the county, he claims that the pop. is going down. So it really depends on where in the county you hunt.

RE: Questions for DMU 61 hunters.
St. Croix, I used to frequent John and Mary' s Bar (now the Praag Frog) quite a bit in the past...actually got to know both of the Comero' s fairly well. Have made it to their deer display show around Labor Day a few times. Kind of a drive from Arcadia though, so don' t make it there too often.
Brian, I had some grillers made by Gundersons a few years back. Excellent! I have heard that their sausages are good as well.

John and Marys was recently sold to a guy from either Cochrane or Fountain City. It was suppose to open for turkey hunting but it hasn' t yet. Hopefully it will open for bowhunting though. And I hope that the new owners put a kitchen in, always looking for some good grub.
