Buck Forage Oats...
Hey gang,
I am interested in adding a couple 1/4 acre sections planted in Buck Forage Oats. Has anyone tried this product and what were the results...
I live in Michigan, so the first frost comes sometimes in mid October...

RE: Buck Forage Oats...
I live in the U.P. and we get our firsts frosts around the 1st of September. BFO was my best fall draw last year, and it mixes well with clovers. We had our first accumulating snow in early October last year, and off and on until the deer left in mid-december. The deer continued feeding on it until the snow covered it and they left about mid-december.
I have friends in the thumb that have planted it for 2 years and the first year they planted it next to MI oats. The BFO stayed green a month longer and were foraged on much more than the MI oats. I've never tried regular oats because I didn't want to waste the space if they didn't work out.

I planted an acre a couple of years ago and the biggest problem I had was that the deer kept them mowed down at ground level. I even tried to put aluminum pie plates out to keep them out of the patch to give the oats time to get ahead, but it didn't work.

RE: Buck Forage Oats...
I planted a plot of Buck Forage Oats two years ago and also put in a smaller plot of Imperial Whitetail Clover in the same field. We saw deer in the clover a lot, but had few sightings in the oats. The oats did not seem to grow very well. I much prefer the Imperial Clover. These were my experiences and they may work better for you.
My son shot a doe that was in the clover during that hunting season, his first.
