RE: What is the lethal minimum ft/lbs for a humane kil
Haven't gotten much sleep lately so the eyes are a little fuzzy. When I first glanced at the topic I read the word "humane" as "human". Got a little worried there.
On topic, I know a few younger hunters that use .243s and have cleanly harvested deers using them. Like others have said, it's all about good shot placement.

Check with your state hunting regulations. Many states have very minimums. For example, in the state of Colorado the following apply:
Rifle: "Must use expanding bullets that weigh at least 70 grains for deer, antelope and bear, 85 grains for elk and moose, and have an impact energy (at 100 yards) of 1,000 ft.pounds as rated by the manufacturer."
Handgun: ".24 caliber (6mm) or larger diameter expanding bullet required. Must product a minimum energy of 550 ft. pounds at 50 yards."
They have similar specifications for Crossbow, compound bow, muzzle loaders, etc.
"Vegetarian" - also translated as "Bad Hunter"!!

Whew, the advice cometh.
Listen, its like this 243,223,222 will work and to each his own.
I have several different rifles and my boys are different. Matthew (15)likes his 308 bolt. I pack him w/150gr soft point and send him on his merry way.
Michael (11)likes my 270 bolt same setup 150 soft
Me I'm a Remington 30-06 auto w150gr FMJ's
I press my own ammo so I can adjust for what ever.
Shot placement is the key, period. The heart shot (kill zone) is my choice and the areas I point out for my kids heart or lung.

FL-hunter, the .243 is definatly a deer getter, but if you want a small caliber rifle that no one will call inadequate, you could look into getting a 25-06 or a .257 roberts

Propmahn - Ah, what a perfect caliber, the .257 Roberts. I saw a pre-1964 Winchester Mod. 70 the other day, for sale online. They wanted a fortune for it, of course. Light kicking, flat-shooting - great for whitetails...Jack O'Conner had it right.

Firstbow, it sounds like your boys have their deer rigs in order, but do I really understand that you are shooting at deer with full metal jacket ammo? And if so, why?!!!
