Haven't gotten much sleep lately so the eyes are a little fuzzy. When I first glanced at the topic I read the word "humane" as "human". Got a little worried there.
On topic, I know a few younger hunters that use .243s and have cleanly harvested deers using them. Like others have said, it's all about good shot placement.
