Stalking/still hunting is by far the most diffcult means to get a deer. In most cases they see, hear, or smell you long before you see them. They usually present some of the most difficult shots as far as presentation and a very limited period of time to get the shot off. You also have to be very knowledgeable of the area you are hunting and habits or routines of the animals in the area.
It can be the most exciting and satisfying means when successful but success this way does not come easily.

There are a lot of tactics to hunting deer. Baiting ( if legal ), road hunting ( if legal ), driving/pushing deer, running dogs ( if legal ), hunting over food plots, stillhunting, stalking, tracking, tree stand, tower standor ground blind hunting. I am not a bigfan of the firstthree methods but all methods work depending on the area.Running dogs is illegal here so not familar with that one.
Best advicewould be to get know the habits of deer, know the area you hunt and how the deer use the area. From there, you can decide which method to apply to make it as easy or challenging as you like.
Don't get stuck on one method as you might be missing outby not tryingthe others. I think that is important especially now that my son is hunting. I want him to know how to use every method even though I don't think much ofbaiting or driving deer. I had to draw the line at roadhunting though!! [:'(]
Who knows where he will end up in life. The more he knows now,the more he can enjoy his hunting later on in life. What methods he chooses to use when he leaves home is up to him. I decided what I wanted out of hunting and so should everyone.Tim

If you want to stalk whitetail, you need to do it on a wet rainy day. The leaves will be wet so they won’t make any noise and the deer will most likely bedded down waiting for the rain to pass. You will need to know where they bed, have the wind in your face, and move very slowly. Stalking is by far one of the most challenging ways to hunt, but one of the most rewarding when you harvest an animal that way.
If you just want to have encounters with whitetails, as most have already stated in this thread, you need to study the layout of the land, know their bedding areas, their trail routes, and their feeding area. Once you have this information worked out, put up a stand or blind between the bedding and feeding areas and just wait, THEY WILL COME…

SCOUT<SCOUT<SCOUT,and more scouting. thats how you kill deer. right now get out in your hunting area's. look for rub lines. rubs will tell you direction of travel. if the direction the deer is traveling is going towards food. follow it backwards, you'll find his bedroom. if you can jump that deer and find out where he goes. now you know his backdoor excape route. and thats a 50% dead deer now. you know where he feeds in the fall, sleeps. and excapes too. hang stands accordingly for food, bed, and excape. play the wind. your halfway home...

Where are you hunting...what is the land like?? trees, no trees, hills, canyons, draws, etc. that is what will make the difference on how you hunt. not to mention the pre-season scouting, etc. that is a must-do.
