PBB,I obviously misinterpreted your "no-brainer" statement, except my apology!Occasionally i carried away with all this new tech stuff in beleiving much of it takes not only the challenge out of the hunt, but the hunt out of the hunter!

By the way, Bob, I won't shoot at birds past 40 yards either. Extended range wasn't my reasoning for adding a scope, I'm used to using a scope to shoot at stationary targets, I also like the positive aiming point. I actually had some fiber optic sights on my gun but had trouble concentrating on lining them up while focusing on the bird. Guess it's just a matter of personal preference.

No doubt about it PBB it is a matter of personal preference! The way we hunt and the equipment we take to the field is dictated by our own past experiences as to what worked and what didn't.I'm not narrow minded enough to say that in another 10 or 20 years down the road when my eyesight may not be so good that I'll still be shooting fibre optics! But for now it works for me and if it aint broke than why try and fix it!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Bob,
No offense taken to your statements. My personal limits are 40 yards, 3 inch shells and nonported choke tubes. I can already tell a difference in how my patterns are centered on the patterning board when using the scope. I thought Mike's statement that you should stay home if you need a scope on a slug gun was a little harsh. Everyone has to set there personal limits on their equipment and shots they are willing to take. I passed a 5 yard shot on an 8 pointer in the velvet Saturday because the angle wasn't quite right for my bow. He finally looked up and saw me and the gig was over but it was one of the most exciting bow hunts I have every had. Two eight point bucks in the velvet and a doe all within 15 yds for about 5 minutes. I'm still curious as to what model Tru-Glo most people are using and do you have trouble with them staying on the rib?
Good Luck Turkey Hunting,
Doug

before nikon and realtree hooked up and started making the HD cammo scopes called Monarch they made a turkey scope in Mossy Oak Break Up. I have seen several still around NIB at local gun shows and on some web pages. The scope is a varible from 1.5-4 I believe and has the special turkey recticle. Hope you can find one if that's what you decide on. Scopes are a great tool but you don't have to have one. Just like you don't have to have camo, extended chokes, tru-glo sights, etc... it just helps. Telling someone they should stay home just because they wish to use a scope for shooting slugs which can be shot at 1.5" - 2" groups at 100 yards with the right sabot/round, gun, scope, etcc.. is silly. Each person has to choose what's right for them as long as it's legal...

Doug,
I've shot Truglo's Magnum Gobble Dot Tri Dot sight system for the last 3 years! Before that I had been shooting thier Mag Glo-Dot sight. Both models come with double stick adhesive tape and snap onto your vent rib! With this model I've never had it come loose from muzzle blast or wet weather.I like the tri dot system somewhat better because having the back v-sight not only centers the shot by lining up the front sight but helps in keeping my cheek on my stock when pulling the trigger!Bob

WOW!! Such hostility!! I find it interesting that I asked a question a year or so ago about using a scope on this forum and found that several folks are using them. I found a Simmons Pro Diamond 2X on e-bay fairly cheap and mounted it on my Mossberg. Did I need it? No! I have taken turkey's without a scope. Did I like it? Absolutely!! Granted---I'm 48 and the eyes ain't what they used to be. Instead of trying to focus front sight---rear sight---turkey, I found it a joy to watch that ole tom approach through a low powered scope---and then having confidence in my aim point. I had the fortune of taking 4 turkeys last spring and therefore my scope is mounted to stay. I'm not sure I would recommend a 4X scope however.

This has been a painstaking question for me for almost a year now. Last year I helped my dad sight in his pentax scope on his 11-87 and I thought the optics were awesome. My eyes are starting to get worse every year in fact I got a stronger prescription last month but I can't pull the trigger on a scope for myself. I have had great success with my tru-glo sights. I also feel why fix what is not broke so until I have a probelm seeing the tru-sights down my barrel I think I will stick with what I have.
