anybody have any ideas on makin a feeder that only turkeys could feed from?
I know crows and different birds will get to it, but I mean a feeder that would allow turkeys to feed, but not hogs, deer, and coon.
I was thinkin of takin a piece of 4" PVC pipe, and put about 1 1/2 feet in the ground, and fill it up with dirt to about 5' above the ground. the PVC would extend on up to about 7' high. that would leave about 2' to fill up with corn. have a 1/2" or 3/4" hole drilled in the PVC just above the 5' mark. then have a chunk of fire wood laid on the ground where the turkeys could jump up on and reach the hole and peck out the corn. this way, it would be to high for deer and hogs to reach, and I don' t think coons can climb that PVC pipe. what do ya' ll think? would that work? would the turkeys ever learn how to get the corn out?
anybody else got any ideas on how to make a feeder that only turkeys could get to?

Not sure if that would work, but it might. I would get a timed feeder, about $40, and mount it on the bottom of a plastic barrel. Then set it to feed chops or chicken scratch feed about 7 in the morning. Once the turkeys find it they will be close by when the feeder goes off. Deer won' t mess with the chops or scratch feed, the coons won' t be likely to feed heavily that time of day and the turkeys will get it before the crows and other birds get to it. Hang the feeder from a limb or leaning tree or the hogs will tear it up. They will tear down your pvc pipe.

I don' t know any type feeder that will keep coons from eating the feed.an automatic feeder will despence scratch feed for the birds, but the hogs will also eat it.you could put a hog wire fence around it,that may keep some of the birds out also unless it is a pretty good sized area.1/4 to 1/2 acer.
I would just say put up an auto. and fill it with scratch and chicken laywing mash, and let it feed what it will.
as was said, set it to feed durning the mid morning, and the coons will be in there beds.the hogs like to feed at first light and pre dark.
just my 2 cents,there are 98 more.

this looks like it might work. I could pull it up high enough that the deer and hogs could not get to it. the coons couldn' t get to it either.
pull it up to about 4 1/2' off the ground. then take a stick of fire wood, stand it up on it' s end, and stake it down good on each side. the turkeys could jump up on the stick of firewood, and peck the corn out. what ya' ll think?

Bo;that will work for the turkeys,But any thing hanging from a limb will not stop the coons and squirrles.
take it fro someone that has been useing hanging feeders for years.there is almost nothing to keep them out.
you can take the design you have and put a large garbage can lid with a small hole(the size of you cable)in the center so it will slide up and down to the top of the feeder, that will keep the coons and squirrles off the feerer.then all you have to worry about is the coons and squirrels running up the wood you are setting for the birds.
trust me if a turkey can stand on it and feed,so can the coons, the squirrels will jump to the feeder.
I am not trying to discurrage you,but from someone that has tried just about every thing.it is a long hard fight.I have used cables between trees with the feeder hanging from the cable 20' from anything, and they will runand climb the cable(1/8" )to get to the feeder.I have put large sheets 2' square of tin, like the rat rings on the ropes to a ship,on the cables and they still get tp the feeders.[X(]
I do not know what to tell you about how to stop them.good luck
if you find somethinng that works, let me know.

well, Tree climber, you sound like a guy that has been there, done that
I sure didn' t know a coon could climb a steel pipe, which I was gonna use instead of a limb from a tree, then shimmy down a small piece of trotline, and then shimmy down the PVC to get to the corn. but, I beleive you know what your talkin about, so if I can just keep the deer and hogs away I' ll be satisfied with that.
thanks Tree climber
ps, if you ever get it figured out, let me know ok?

Bo: to show you how they get around. I won one of the deer blocks at the feed store, the one with corn, sweet feed, molasses and all that sweet stuff.I knew the coons and hogs would eat it all, so I took a 10' galvinized ground rod from work,it is a 5/8" rod.drove it into a stump till it was about the height of a deers head.then I drilled a hole 3/4 the way through the block and sat it onto the rod.thinking the deer could walk up to it and eat." WRONG" after about a week or so there was sand up the rod and sand on top of the block.????????? a day or so later,I found what it was.there was coon crap on top of the block.it was at my wifes tripod, she likes to set in it and photo the deer and birds durning the off season.she said is was quite a show watching that coon trying to climb that rod.after a few tries, he made it and sat on top of the block and started eating.
thats when I almost gave up on tring to stop them, now I just set my traps and catch 5 or 6 and thats that for the season.then we start next year.
I have a market for them, and have sold 23 this past fall, all from around my feeders.
the garbage can lid works the best.
if I find a cure for them I will patten it and sell you a copy LOL
