RE: Elk Hunting Advice: Your Do's and Don'ts

I have a heavy hunt camp style. We hunt in a combination area of private and public land. Some of my Do’s and Don’ts are as follows.

Do get to know the landowners. They can be your best assets...

RE: What Is Your Favorite Elk Camp Set Up?

EKM,

I like the topic. It sounds similar to an email I read recently.

We are a heavy hunt crew also. We have a 20’X30’ main tent with 6’ sidewalls and 12’ ridge. It has two 5’X7’ entrance...

RE: Best Caliber for Bear

Jman,

EKM is right. At the ranges you could possibly be shooting the .338 is probably the lightest you should look at.

RE: Bullet weight for Elk

Hey Beave

Don't you think you are being a little harsh? I think you missed the spirit of my post. I am a firm believer (now) in the merits of shooting an animal through the engine room with a...

RE: 7mm vs. 30-06

Where do you plan to hunt? In the open or in a dense lodgepole forest? Or possibly in between. I am of the opinion if you are looking for an all around weapon then you are looking at the light...

RE: Stopping power.

Leave it to Beaver to bring elk into a whitetail discussion. I agree with the ElkampMaster. 65 yards is a short shot and you could use any bullet weight, but you need to stick to the premium...

RE: Please help with selecting a pressure canner

Do a search for "All American Pressure Canner". This is by far the best in my opinion. Low to no maintanence, as long as you keep it clean. No rubber gaskets. Positive locking system. It's...

RE: Froze At Night, No Elk, Left Holding The Bag!

Elkampmaster,

It sounds like you run a tight ship. Do you need a Campchef? I can cook just about anything on a fire. Pineapple upsidedown cake, you pick the fruit cobbler, Blackbean Chicken...

RE: Froze At Night, No Elk, Left Holding The Bag!

Hey Cold Huntbrrrrr,

Colorado Bob and Howler are right, canvas wall tents are really the nicest way to hunt camp. It is more expensive to start but pays big dividends in the end.

About your...

RE: Advice on guns/calibers for mule deer and elk

Well here we go again. This seems like a popular topic. I believe everyone here has given good advice. I have or have had all the calibers except for the .375 H&H that everyone is speaking of. I...

Irch,

Was the velvet living or dead? How many points was the buck? Finally what part of the country are you in?

RE: Tips for an elk hunt

I agree, I used to shoot .25-06 and you are right it is all about bullet placement. I now shoot .338 Win Mag and I am sold. I have never had an elk take more than a couple of steps. I am still a...

RE: Bullet weight for Elk

Wow this has been a pretty spirited discussion. I guess I might throw in my two cents.

For years I hunted with a .25-06 shooting 97gr and 110gr bullets and never lost an elk. Although they were...
