Bullet weight for Elk
#51
Elkamp,
Best 270 load on the planet fer elk. Wanna know it? Maybeso it'll help yer friend an' others what wanna use a 270 an' not be hampered. Here it is (I ain't gonna give the powder charge 'cause everbody needs to piddle with thet a lil):
1. Nosler 160 grain Partition
2. A healthy charge of Reloader 19
3. A standard of magnum primer, depending on which shoots best in yer rifle. Short barrels should try a magnum primer fer sure.
Ain't nuthin' more to it. The above recipe will shoot as good or better than anythin' else you currently shoot, an' it will do a fine job on wapiti.

Thanks for the 270 "wapiti buster" recipe. I'll check to see if he is reloading his own ammo. You're consistent in your message, go heavy for caliber: 160gr is heavy for a 270 in fact I didn't know they made bullets over 150gr. We'll see what we can do for him because it is frustrating when one takes his favorite deer buster up elk hunting and it suddenly feels like one is shooting a BB gun.

Good judgement comes from bad experience! Half of elk hunting is knowing what NOT to do!

Campchef,
I won't even respond to fellers takin' head an' neck shots at 150 yards. So you won't be hearin' nuthin' from me and I wanted you to know why. Also, stay away from my unit.

Hey Beave
Don't you think you are being a little harsh? I think you missed the spirit of my post. I am a firm believer (now) in the merits of shooting an animal through the engine room with a good caliber and a good bullet.
I was trying to relay that if you choose a small caliber doesn't mean it won't bring down an elk but you will have to adjust your shot placement and shooting style to accommodate it's shortcomings. A small caliber adds limitations to you that are not a problem for the shoulder howitzers.
I think you could us a nice long soak in the spa and a hot toddy to relax you. You sound so tense. Relax, repeat after me HHHMMMMMMMMM.
Doesn't that feel better? Now what is a BeaverJack anyway? A device to lift a rodent with a fat tail so you can change it's tire? <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am no nor will I profess to be a Elk expert. I have taken 2 witha 270 though and I used the 140gr Failsafe. I agree they are big and maybe the toughest animal to put on the dirt...shot placement, as well as a solid constructed bullet is a must. I personally wouldn't use a plain jane of the shelf ammo for elk, handloaded (bonded bullet) or a premium bullet (nosler part, a frame, barnes x or bear claw to name a few). As far as grain it would depend on the rifle and what shot the best, same with bullet style.
my neighbour lives for elk hunting and shoots a 280 with 165 gr Nitrex grand slams...it works very nicely and he has yet to lose an animal with this load. His shoots can range to tight or 300 yard plus. Personally I will be loading 160 or 175 grain parts next fall for my elk hunt out of my 7 rem mag. I would rather have the insurance of busting bone, then having to try and for sure place the shot in the rib. Oh BTW I am a good shot and have yet to not hit the vitals when aiming there....but I ain't going to chance it on my elk hunt...which I do every 3 years.
I would say let your gun dictate the round you load and practice it free (hand as well). do some research on the right bullet for the task in whichever gun you choose to tote. I am a firm believer of matching the bullet to the animal and have no problems switching for different game. Since for deer I only shoot BT's out of my 270 or 7 rem mag and love the results. But think it would be ignorant and stupid to say I won't change and hope that my shot was perfect to allow me to use the same bullet.
It's hunting the only thing we can do is be prepared for anything and everything. Success is usual that much sweeter when you have done your homework and it pays off...the fluke isn't the best avenue.

Sorry ma'am, didn't mean to offend you by talkin' straight to yer lil' man. But you gotta be worried. What kind of drink is a "hot toddy" fer a man? Thet's what them lil' ol ladies drink back home. You need to git yer feller some mules an' let 'im go into the mountings fer 'bout a month next spring. Tuffin' 'im up a lil an' git 'is mind off takin' a bath an' relaxin'. Real men don't relax, an' bathin' is infrequent at best. Now ol' BJ knows what wimmins want. You jus' come on down here an' let me 'splain it to ya while yer ol' man's tuffinin' up in the mountings next spring.
