Dear Board; I would like to know what you guys think is the best rifle? caliber? for mule deer and elk. Moderately priced, durable, dependable and accurate rifle. Good ballistics for out west, longer distances and bearable recoil.

The 7mm mag or 300win mag would both be good choices. The 300 has a little more power but also has more recoil although it is tolerable by most people.

out to 300 yards, go with a .308 or 30-06. there limits can be pushed out slightly further, maybe 400 yards, but then if shots are expected to be at 400yards, you might want to consider getting closer to the deer,
as for the rifle, any will do really, savage, remington, ruger, winchester, tikka, etc.. but not really in any particular order

you can never have too many guns

I like the 7mm Mag. Flat shooting and not too much recoil, takes both deer and elk at 400 yds no problem. Learn how to shoot it well and I promise you'll love it.

I had the same question 30 years ago. My answer was a Remington 700 in 30/06 with a Leupold scope. It has never let me down & I've never felt undergunned. Taken everything in Colorado except a moose. Never a problem on elk, bighorn sheep, deer , antelope, Mtn Goat, black bear & cougar. FYI-- I shot 180 grain "Core-lokts"

Them las two fellers has sumthin' on the ball. Ain't no reason to buy them cannons an' plenty of reasons not to. Stick with a '06. Remingtons are fine, I prefer Winchesters.
