For those who shoot and reload for the 300 WSM. What kind of velocities are you getting from 180 and 200 grain bullets. What kind of rifle do you have. Does anyone have the Browning A-Bolt with the Boss? If so what kind of recoil are you looking at? The bad shoulder is the reason I ask. The recoil of the 30-06 does not bother it if I keep the number of shots from the bench to a minimum. I had a Savage synthetic 300 Win Mag a while back. That was a bit to much and caused the shoulder to ache for a couple days after just a few shots. The Savage however is a pretty light rifle. I believe under 7 lbs. I don't like the Idea of a compesater but maybe the boss which as I understand can be opened and closed might be ok. Is this true with the Boss. I have never shot one. I may be hunting in the heart of Grizzly country next fall. My other option might be a BLR in 450 Marlin. I will be hunting Moose. I do have a 45-70 but its just a single shot as I wore my old Marlin out. I have a 280 as well but its a single shot as well. Thanks folks.

DAAA! Now I remember about the boss replacement gizzmo. Its funny what a guy can forget. I have been checking the MFG webb sights looking for the heaviest 300 WSM. So far the Vanguard is the heaviest I have found at 7 3/4 lbs. Perhaps with a heavy scope and sling and a good recoil pad, it should not be to bad. I have a good shooting Browning A-Bolt 308 that I could use. The guy I am going hunting with has a 416 Rem Mag that he bought from me quite a few years back.

Let me know how it works. By the time I fix one up heavy enough to soak up the recoil, I will have to hire someone to carry it for me. The left arm will carry a lot as long as it is straight down like a bucket of water. However there is no power in it at all when I get it past waist high. I may end up hunting with a contender handgun again so I can use my good right arm and my good left eye.

JamesB, I spend lots of hours every week at the range and I shoot a few rifles that have some recoil (my largest is a 300RUM). Santa brought me a Caldwell 'Lead Sled' this year for range use and boy is it super. If you have shoulder issues, you might want to check these out. You can shoot all day with no ill effects, if you can hold up to the one or two shots you'll need at game. Good luck!

James, I just bought a Savage in .300 WSM. First time I shot it...kicked like a SOB. replaced the stock pad with a Sims Limbsaver pad and can shoot all day long. I would have given ALOT more money had I known what it could do for me...FYI

I was looking at that lead sled in a catolog last week. That looks like a good deal. Our little gun shop here in town has the limb savers. Believe it or not, I need to get one for my 308 Lightweight A Bolt salker. That thing thinks it a 300 mag in the recoil dept. The felt recoil is more than my 7600 30-06. I suppose its a stock fit issue. I looked at a new Savage accu trigger in 300 WSM yesterday at Gander Mountain. I might have to put it on lawaway until spring.

I have used decellerator pads in the past. Sims nailed this one though. great product. My .300 WSM now feels like a .22/250. Sims doesnt make a pad for the Savage syn stocks yet. but I sorted through the templates and the Thompson oncore pad fits pretty well, had to drill one new hole and minimal shaping.
Also, if you go with the new accu trigger, you will love it!! great trigger with no creep. I just finished with breaking the barrel in, best 7 shot group so far was .75 Have had a few 3 shot .5" groups. 1st Savage I have ever owned, wont be the last!!

James you will find the Vanguard in 300 wsm to be a real ***** cat recoil wise and will suprise you with its accuracy. It is phenomenal. I have been getting 2950 with 65 grains of H4350 and a nosler partition out of a Model 70 and an Abolt when I owned them. The 2 didn't differ by more then 10 fps even though the Abolt is 1" shorter in the barrel length area. Factory ammo was right where it was supposed to be according to published figures as well.
