I was reading some loads and they used a Remington primer. I was wondering if it makes much difference to use a different primer. I was thinking of using the CCI primers. Also what is everyones choice of primer when they reload?? Thanks again.

with shotshell reloading some primers are much hotter than others.....and I don't remember now which ones.....One of them is a Federal primer and the other (I believe) is the Fiochi)...anyway with shotshell reloading I stick to the published recipe even though some substitution can be allowed.
I've never been cautioned about rifle primers or handgun primers for that matter.....I've always assumed a large rifle primer is a large rifle primer regardless of the manufacturer. Granted I always back off and work up again anytime I change anything but primer substitution has never (so far) changed anything for me and that includes using a magnum primer in place of a large rifle primer.
Exchanging cases can get one in a pickle much faster than changing primers IMO.

I pretty much use Winchester primers any more tho I still have some CCI, Federal and a bunch of old,old Peters (Rem) primers in stock. I rarely, if ever, use maximum load data so I don't worry to much about switching them around UNLESS I substitute a magnum primer for a standard primer, then I back off a bit and work up again.
I've never noticed any diffrence in performance between the diffrent rifle and pistol primers out there with one exception, I have a 30-30 Contender that seems to prefer Federal primers over the rest.

Hello,
With rifle or pistol primers I have never noticed a diffrence from CCI or Win. Other than color(win are brass) and anvil thickness(CCI seem to be slightley thicker). The Anvil thickness does not affect about 99 percent of shooters.
I have a SKS and with win primers it will "Run away from me"(not stop fireing untill the mag is empty even if your finger is off the trigger!). This is Dangerous and definatly NOT cool. But with CCI primers this did not happen. I can buy special military type primers(Heavy anvil) and have no problems but with how cheap the wolf ammo is I just use that. Run away guns are rare, and it only happens with Semi Auto military guns. These guns have a harder firing pin hit(It must work evertime) and the reloading books will tell you to use military type primers. My dads sks only did this once with the win primers. His sks is like new and mine has fired at least 3000 times so maybe the gun needs work.
I use Remington 209 primers for my shotguns(I reload rem hulls).
I Generaly use CCI primers for everthing else.
Recentley I was at a gunshow and could not pass up some WIN primers. At $12/1000 I felt like I robbed the guy. I bought Large and small pistol primers and havent noticed any diffrence between win and cci primers. I even have used OLD win pistol primers in my 45acp and havent noticed a diffrence. With OLD I mean 40 year old wood box tray winchester primers that my dad had. They still work fine.
