winchester ballistic silvertips

First, there is no such thing as "knock down power". A bullet is not going to knock down anything the size of a deer no matter how big it is or how fast it is going. Sometimes you get lucky and drop one where it stands simply because you either broke the spine, both shoulders, or everything happend perfectly at that perfect split second in time.
I remember reading about someone that held a steel plate in front of them while someone else shot at it with a rifle. The mans arms hardly moved when the bullet impacted. 2000 foot pounds sounds like a lot of energy and it is but a bullet is a very light weight object and it delivers that energy in an animal over time and sheds its energy as it travels through the animal.
Second, the 130 grain ballistic tip bullets are perfectly suited for whitetails or any other deer size game.

I did give the 130 grain, .270 BST's a penetration test once. I stacked about 2 feet or so of wet phonebooks, then another 2 feet of dry magazines, "Just in case" The bullets blew through the phone books, then 3/4 ways through the magazines. The exit hole out of the phonebooks was about the size of a softball, and made a hell of a mess on the 100 yard backboards.

i read an article that said that split second is related to the animals heartbeat, the impact of the bullet causes an rush of blood to the brain if i remember right.
i got box of the ballistic silvertips a couple years ago for my 7MM on sale and have shot probally 5 deer (4 mulies/1 whitetail). i'm no bullet expert but i noticed major fragminatation of the bullet. penetration was fine, downed all animals with no problem but noticed blood streaks through the animal from fragmination.

All I use in my .270 is BST's and they have worked like a champ. As far as "knock down power" I dropped a 400+ pound black bear in it's tracks with a double lung shot. I also dropped 2 whitetail where they stood with the same shot. None of the three had a spinal hit or broken shoulders, simply no lungs left at all. Bigbulls, I understand what you are saying about the small size of the bullett not having knockdown power, but I think you need to take more into consideration than that. For instance, these shells are made to fragment so I think that plays a larger role than the kinetic energy. I could shoot a fmj with 2500 foot pounds and have it pass right through and not find the animal for hundreds of yards. However I could make the same shot with a 1500 foot pounds BST and the animal could drop where it stood simply from the internal damage caused by fragmentation which seems to be the case with this particular round. So I think that there are more things that need to be taken into consideration when referring to knock down power. IMHO.
From what I have seen in the field these rounds do a tremendous job and I will never shoot anything else through my .270

Excellent choice for deer sized and thin skinned game.I shoot the 140 gr,BST out of my 7mm08 and the results are both inpressive and devestating,Like they were struck with lightning.Eg:On an antelope hunt in Wy, a hunting partner shot an antelope through the boiler room with a 7mm rem mag and a 160gr. nosler, that animal ran off as if it were never touched(he found it dead about 100 yards over the next hill, very dead but a small exit wound)When he and another friend witnessed me shoot my antelope with my 7mm08 pistol with 140gr BST's their jaws where hanging on the ground, that antelope got a building droped on him flipped up in the air dead on its back legs staight up in the air.You have to match the proper bullet to the game you are hunting, that controled expanding nosler didn't preform as well as the BST on that sized game.
