Ok like someone said before pick up a Remington and then Pick up a Ruger ... WHile both are accurate rifles and the Ruger has some design improvements over it , the Remington wins out in handling and feel. DId I forget resale value its no competition at all and if you decide to upgrade barrel and etc you'll find a lot more equipment for it as well as gunsmiths who will work on it. I own Ruger,Winchester,Remington,Browning,Weatherby and now Sako once again so I am not really biased toward one brand or another.

Ruger M-77, I've had Remingtons and they were okay.I bought a 700 ADL about 7 years ago strictly for hunting. It has performed well.Once I bought my first Ruger M-77 that was it.I haven't looked at a Remington since.Well I did look at a 710 and couldn't believe Remington would release this kind of garbage.Ruger's come with integral bases and a set of scope rings. This will save you 50.00 or more when you buy a base(s) and a decent set of rings for the Remington.Ruger and Remingtons MSRP are both high. Both can be found much lower then the MSRP. Before I would buy a new Remington I would look for a used one. Remington's quality has really slipped along with their Customer Service.I receive the wishlist from www.gunsamerica.com daily. There is always new and used M-77's there way below Ruger's MSRP.I'm not saying the Remington 700 is junk but the quality isn't there like it use to be.I think the Ruger has Remington beat hands down. One last thing Ruger's customer service is second to none.If for some reason the Ruger has problems Ruger will fix it. They will make it right.

There's been a helluva lotta complaining lately about Remingtons and their service department. I own and have owned many Remmy 721 and 700 rifles and thought they was very fine rifles.....but haven't bought one in several years so I can't confirm this complaint.
I have two Ruger SA revolvers and like them but it's the end of the road for me when it comes to Ruger long guns....I've shot some good ones but the two I owned was enough!!
Personally I'd be looking at the Howa, Winchester 70, Tikka, Browning A-bolt, or any of the mauser based rifles.

Let me give you one example.....I bought a Ruger #1 varmint rifle in 6MM rem. It was beautiful.....pretty wood.....all in all a piece of pride in ownership. However at the range the best I could do was about 2.5" groups no matter what I tried.
I returned it to ruger.
I got it back and now the best I could do was about 2.87" groups.....Again I returned it to Ruger and again I got it back.
Again the groups was well over 2.5".
I went to the phone and called Ruger asked what load they was using to test the gun before they returned it to me.....I didn't get an answer.....I asked what was their standard of accuracy they was testing it to. I didn't take BS for a response and demanded to know their testing standard.....They finally admitted that their #1 varmint rifle's standard for accuracy was 1.5" at 50.....(YES 50) yards.
I owned a M77 in 7MM Mag and it wouldn't feed the shells up to the bolt from the magazine......fire a round and open the bolt and a new round didn't pop into place to allow the bolt to feed it to the chamber.
Ruger sent me a new magazine box that did exactly the same thing!!!!!
Screwem!!!!!

vapodog, If there is a next time contact me and I'll give you a couple names to contact.I'm still surprised you didn't get satisfaction from them.I've contacted the service manager and he always came through with flying colors. His secretary is another one who is very helpful.I have a S/S #1 in 45-70(Limited run). Before trading for it. I shot a few rounds. It was a little low for me however the holes were almost touching each other.
