Having shot both a Marlin .30-.30 and a .270 A-Bolt, I actually thought the .30-30 recoiled more, but I'm sure that was because the .30-30 was a relatively light-weight Trapper style, at 5.5 lbs or so. The recoil of the .30-30 in a light weight weapon is actually surprising. (Well, it was to me, anyway...)

Greets,
Well my initial reaction was the .270 hands down.. But then I thought about it, I havent fired my parents 30-30 in years, but it is a saddle rifle, real light weight, Sears model lever gun. The .270 I fired was a remington.. I think, its bolt action and its my buddies hunting rifle. it has a synthetic stock and has a recoil pad, ( albeit a small one )
That said after thinking really hard I think moms 30 30 but only by a pinch, maybe it was about the same.
Just my uneducated opinion!

What's with all the sudden concern about recoil on these mild rifles? Shoot the rifle and if the recoil bothers you, don't shoot it anymore or get some sort of recoil reducing device like a pad, muzzle brake or put lead in the stock. Alot of recoil is in your head. If you think it is going to hurt it will. Be positive and don't worry about the recoil. Concentrate on the fundamentals and you shouldn't even feel the shot.

Quilly's right...it all depends on the weight and setup of the rifle. I've shot 30-30's that felt like a .22 mag and some that felt like a .450 Marlin. Same with the .270. I have a 1963 BSA .270 bolt action that will knock your fillings loose<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>. I've shot some A-bolts that didn't kick much at all. The key is to try them out and shoot what's comfortable.
