Does the 597 have the metal or plastic magazine? If plastic, you probably got one of the bad ones. The new ones come with metal magazine and a few other internal improvements. Take it back and exchange it for a newer one. As far as Remington goes, I would not shoot another brand. I have 3 870' s, of which, I have never had one problem with. Yeah two of them have plastic trigger guards, but I prefer that. Makes the gun lighter, holds up better than the metal ones, and probably makes it easier for me to buy one (cheaper). If you are a serious target shooter or hunter, then don' t look at the 597' s or 710' s. Remington is hands down the best manufacturer for the money. By the way, my game baq or deer pole have never been empty because I was carrying a Remington in the field.

Dude, just say no to the drugs. Cocaine can kill, and Mary Jane will make you stupid. Seriously get yourself in a program.
Are you a " serious target shooter" with factory 700' s? I mean, I got two 700' s that I replaced the barrels with kriegers and stocks, and triggers that I beleive are serious target guns, but never a stock one.

BC, no I am not a target shooter! What I am saying is that in the field, I would not want another gun than my 870' s. I am sure that you have killed bigger bucks with your custom rifles. My stock 870 has killed 4 bucks in the last 4 years that scored 140-160, so I must be missing something. Then again, I am a hunter, not a target shooter.

None had the plastic trigger guard...........All had trigger lightened up, but we do that anyway. All were very accurate with just the trigger work done. I' m not a target shooter but i would buy another 700 in a min. The 597, don' t know never even looked at em. I bought a ruger 10/22 about 4yrs ago and to be honest i am not that impressed, they have alot of after market barrels, stocks, triggers, but i dont use my 22 much anyway. I am with the other poster, i say Remington makes the best rifles ( right out of the box). To each is own, some people like Savage,Browning,Winchester,Weatherby, etc. That' s what makes this a great country you can buy whatever ya want! You dont see me telling people to lay off the drugs just because they dont like the same brand i do. You can make any rifle accurate! Just keep buying em all, i hope all manufacturers stay in buisness that way we all have alot of different choices.

I need to clarify my earlier statement that bashed Remington...I was only bashing their newer rifles. I wouldn' t own one...unless it was a 40X.
The shotguns that Rem is putting out are still quality in my eyes.
Isn' t it funny how they cheapened their rifles, but not their shotguns? Is there a different branch of the company for each weapon? Just wondering...........

remington buddy, settle down. This is just the internet, I don' t know if the boy is on drugs or just hasn' t been around much. His statement seemed funny, almost illogical. So I made another funny about it. How many different brands do you have exposure too? If you want, I can sell you a 597 real cheap, so you can keep having remingtons.
Ruben, mostly talking about rifles here. Also got 870' s.

BC, trust me i am calm. I just dont understand why everyone wants to tell someone else that there favorite brand is crap while another is the best. I dont want a 597 but if i had it to do over again i wouldnt get the ruger. Oh yeah by the way i and millions of others will continue to buy Remington' s.

I grew up duck and dove hunting with an 870. It was a nice shotgun, but I sold it many years ago. My last Remington purchase was a 700 chambered in 7mm Rem Mag. It never was a very good shooter until I pillar bedded the action and replaced the trigger. I have had problems with it not wanting to extract fired cases. Overall, I' ve been less than pleased with it, but I' ll probably keep it as a backup.
Those who say that Remington makes the finest guns simply don' t have much (if any) experience with other brands. Of course, some of the finer guns cost considerably more, but even in the Remington price range I think there are better options. I' m just not impressed with anything Remington currently makes and probably won' t buy another unless things change for the better.
