I think their quality went downhill in the late 80' s prior to that I never had a problem with a 700 never ever. Since the late 80' s I have had about a 50 % percent success rate with them. We are talking stupid crap like safetys that don' t work right...chambering problems, feed problems none of this with any grade lower than BDL and it also happened with a custom shop gun that should never have left the custom shop.... stuff you don' t find out about until you shoot the darn gun(s). Last week I almost bought a 700 BDL in 300 SAUM but thought about it again and didn' t do it. This one appeared to be a well made gun , getting a little gun shy with them now . I personally think they make good guns and bad ones unfortunately I feel like a magnet with the bad ones. Bottom line is if you have one and it works keep it. If your in the market for a new one be wary of what your buying.

HISTORY REPEATS. About 12 years ago Remington was selling the 522 Viper it was .22 lr , it was a semi/ clip fed plastic stock rifle. That yes because of brand name reputation I did purchase one. What a piece of junk!!!! When Remington put the 597 on the market you think they would have taken the (522) into cosideration and tried winning some cutomers back by taking what is a product with the lowest cost and highest sales .22, lr in general and designed a good rifle it would appear this it not the case. The company' s need to profit was placed before the need' s of the customer. Thus the story of the bean counter and big buisness.

Since the 597 is the only .22 rifle I own at the present time, I haven' t thrown it in the garbage, YET!
One day, I' ll get a Marlin or Ruger, then I' ll probably wrap the 597 around a tree somewhere! I don' t think I could sell it to my worst enemy!
Anyway, I went out plinking this morning and I had forgotten just how sorry this piece of crap really is! Jammed first shot, and the trigger!!!!! Can it legally even be called a trigger? A guy could dislocate his trigger finger trying to fire that thing!
The 597' s not even good for practicing with!

Not to open up another can of worms.I' ve heard of allot of complaints with the Remington 700ML.I' ve heard they' re notorious for misfires.I was going to buy one a couple years ago and a good friend talked me out of it.I' m glad now he did.

Bigcountry, I' ve also noticed that if you don' t fully load the magazine, you don' t get as many jams. Still you could not give me another 597, and judging Remington' s quality by the 597 or 710, I' ll never own another Rimington!
