Another Remington Junk Report
#11
Sat next to a kid in the Emergency room once.........I was there for a Softball injury, but HE was there because his hand was bleeding and full of little chunks of brass from a .22 case that blew up on him because he was trying to extract a misfed round on a semi-auto .22 with a screwdriver. [
] Wasn' t very pretty.........and they left him wait just like everyone else to boot.
If that thing doesn' t get worked out, and you decide he still should keep it please take the time to show him how to properly handle a situation like a stuck misfed round.........empty cases are one thing. Live rounds are another.
Sounds like a piece of CRAP.........I' d take it back to Wally World and raise holy hell that it doesn' t work! They' ll refund the money if you whine hard enough and maybe threaten bodily harm. Then take the boy and his money and get him that Ruger 10/22.

Bigcountry,
There is no fix for a piece of crap like the 597! The whole thing is junk!
The best use of a 597 is a door prop, paper weight, or troutline anchor!
Get him another gun whenever its possible. Good luck!

I ground down the ejector to a small point, so that it looed like a half circle, and got rid of the flat surface that comes into contact with the spent case. It' s kind of hard to explain but if you take out the ejector and place a dime on it so that there now is a point at the top you should be able to see what I am talking about.
I also took out the extractor and filed it down with a small fine file so that the " point" of the extractor was centered instead of being on the bottom. It ejects the cases straight out now instead of into the top of the receiver.
The gun is really easy to take apart. It' s only heald together with pins.

Well the boys got it and is depressed as all get out. Ok, what seems to be the major problem on this rifle? Is it the ejector? Seems to me that the clip is not that great? Can it be fixed? I am going to see if my gunsmith up in MD can do anything for it. Doesn' t look as cut and dry taking apart. Actually I shot some stingers thru it this morning and it only jams 1 out 15 shots or so.

Oh come on, Remington is just trying to add a challange to hunting and shooting. Poor accuracy, poor quality control, poor reliability and poor service. What else can they do to increase the challange of shooting?

I AM SORRY GUYS,BUT I CANNOT BE A PART OF YOUR BASHING OF REM. PRODUCTS BECAUSE OF THE 597 AND 710.COMPETION IN THE FIREARMS BUSINESS HAS GOT TO BE FIERCE.THE REM LINE PROBABLY HAS MORE FIREARMS IN THE FIELD THAN ANY OTHER.IT IS LIKE ZEBCO REELS,I HAVE BEEN BUYING THEM FOR 30 YEARS AND NOW WILL NOT BUY THEM BECAUSE ALL THE 33S I HAVE BOUGHT IN THEN LAST 10 YEARS SRE SO CHEAPLY MADE THEY ARE NO GOOD.HOWEVER,IF THE OLD SAYING OF YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR IS TRUE,STAY AWAY FROM THE LOW END MODELS THAT ARE SOLD AT MOSSBERG AND SAVAGE PRICES! I DON' T THINK THEY MAKE BETTER GUNS THAN THE 870,1100,1187,3200 OR 700.

Bummer. See guys I got a volitile situation. Got a kid with his first 22LR, who is depressed. Got a brother with some serious sibling rivalry that says, " you think you are an expert about guns" . Ah, he can work it out. Life is full of disappointments. He better learn it now.
You know I was thinking about how dangerous this could be for a kid his age. I was digging out parts of brass that got hung up. With another round going in. your right, this could be dangerous. Thinking about giving him mine before going back to MD. I can always pick up another one.

Loner, I got a 270 700 that is a great weapon. But its 15 years old. I also have a great 870 and 1187. I like my browning gold better, but still the 1187 is good. But have you tried out these newer 700' s. Last three had serious issues. One I finally got rebarreled. One had to have a crown recut. (HOW DO YOU SCREW UP A CROWN). And all have the roughest barrels I have seen.

As a gunsmith I probably see more guns with problems then most people. If you look in my racks you can see what not to buy by how many of what are there. First on the list is the Rem semi autos, but you will not see many in my shop any more, I wont for the most part work on them. You will see lots of newer 700 Rems with everything from rough barrels accuracy problems to trigger problems. I will say here that most of the trigger problems are from over lubrication and dried, gumed up oil. I am very supicious that this is what their trigger problem is caused by as several of the gummed up rifles went off on their owners at inopertune moments.
For the most part Remington shotguns are rather good and trouble free, but even here the quality control is not what it used to be. I think that most of the problem is that Big Green has gotten too big and is forgetting how they got there.
It is you people out there that put them up there as one of the big guys. If Remington does not watch out it will be you people who will bring them down from there too.
Big companies seem to forget a very important fact that small businesses can' t When a Rifle leaves my shop my name and reputation are leaving with it.
When a gun leaves the Remington factory their name and reputation also go with it. If you can not do it right then don' t send it out there is no excuse for poor quality control or poor quality. So guys, keep at it Remington may smarten up, either that or everybody will be shooting Savage or Rugers.
