I thought I would feel a big difference moving up from my 7MM Rem Mag (Sako A7) to my .338 Win Mag (Browning X-Bolt).

Both guns are less then 7lbs and I'm 5' 6" 165lbs - no problem.............

Look for Max eye relief and you're good to go !!!

BTW - I did get "scoped" once years ago; shooting on a sharp angle up a hillside, from a sitting position (stupid on my part).

If recoil is an issue, install a Limbsaver recoil pad, and that will get rid of alot of the felt recoil. I was amazed at what the Limbsaver pad did for my .300 winny.

For what it's worth, the only scoped rifle that bit me above the eye was my 'ol .270. Years ago, happened when I took a shot while lying down. Ouch!!!

I have a Ruger .300 WM, and shoot 180 grain spitzers out of it. I dont think it has much more recoil than a 220 grain 30-06. Benchrest shooting will get old relatively quickly though.
It overlaps awful close to your 7mm mag. I would have a tough justification adding the .300 just for occ. target shooting. It would pay for alot of ammo.

I have hunted with my savage 300 win mag for the last few years.

The good: I've never had one animal take more than a step.. no joke.
The bad: It does have some felt recoil

I bought it, because I wanted the "biggest baddest" gun. Kind of like buying a 10 second car for everyday driving if you're hunting deer/hogs.

In the end, I realized it's overkill for anything smaller than elk. My dad has a 270 that he never uses and that's going to be my new go to gun. I don't regret the 300 win mag, because I plan on taking it on an elk hunt soon. However, I wouldn't buy one to use as a primary deer/hog gun.

I have a Ruger M-77 chambered in 300-win mag with a Leupold Vari.X-II 3x9x40mm scope. I have owned this rifle for close to 25-years, I have never been scoped.
I will giving this rifle to a friends son when he is old enough to handle the recoil.
I will continue hunting with my 270-Winchester and my 340-Weatherby.
The 270-Winchester is my Deer/Antelope rifle.
The 340-Weatherby is my Elk/Bear rifle.

Your gun collection is starting to have calibers that overlap each other. You could sell your 30-06 and 7mm and hunt everything with the 300-win mag and 270-winchester.

If you can shoot a 3.5 and a 7 mag with no prob you wont notice much difference.

I have a 300 WM in a Remington Sendero. It's a heavy rifle and helps with the recoil a little. With 180gr loads it's not that bad to shoot. It gets interesting when loaded with 200gr or 220gr bullets. I am currently hunting with a 280AI because I wanted a lighter rifle for packing around. My 300 tipped the scales at 13 pounds loaded, scoped, and sling. Kind of heavy to be lugging up and down the Mountains at elevation. The funny thing is though my 280AI feels like it kicks just as hard as my 300WM because it's only about 7.5 pounds.
In the end you are the one who has to spend the money and you're the one who will either be happy or not.

They make scopes with a little more eye relief. That would solve your problem.

I have had several 300win mag and WSM and the recoil is stout but completly tolerable. a good stock, recoil pad, is all you need, I also use steel rings and bases and it is sweet.
If you can shoot a 3006 you can handle a 300 and then get a 338, cant have too many guns:-)

Had a chance to fire a few rounds of .300 Win. Mag through and old Winchester 70.
Recoil wasn't bad at all. Just kinda seemed like the next step up from the 7mm. Rem. Mag.
Thinking of maybe a .300 Winny in a Ruger no. 1
26" barrel and overall length of a 22" barrel bolt rifle.

Opinions????
