I have hunted with my savage 300 win mag for the last few years.

The good: I've never had one animal take more than a step.. no joke.
The bad: It does have some felt recoil

I bought it, because I wanted the "biggest baddest" gun. Kind of like buying a 10 second car for everyday driving if you're hunting deer/hogs.

In the end, I realized it's overkill for anything smaller than elk. My dad has a 270 that he never uses and that's going to be my new go to gun. I don't regret the 300 win mag, because I plan on taking it on an elk hunt soon. However, I wouldn't buy one to use as a primary deer/hog gun.
